Rutland has done its share....Castanet article

https://www.castanet.net/news/Kelowna/2 ... -its-share

1. Rutland has done its share - as have other neighbourhoods, and the downtown business sector so get rid of Cornerstone...

2. I would like to suggest they stop calling these drug dens "supportive" housing. That, to me, implies that we are willing to support people to use illegal drugs and that it is somehow OK. It is NOT OK by me - just look at how they are living their lives? What about that is OK? Is it a stigma? Sure, but it is what it is. I want the message to kids to be DON'T DO DRUGS.

3. I do not want to see these drug dens in family neighbourhoods. Little kids are too impressionable. Yes, we should be teaching our young people to be "inclusive" of all people. Great - all for that. I am not at all for leading them to believe that anything goes and it doesn't matter if you break the law so let's show the kids that these people got in trouble and we are going to SUPPORT them to get back on track by getting them OFF drugs and therefore we are building REHAB centres where they can go to get better. That's the type of help and caring I want to purvey to children and young adults.

4. I do not want little kids to see the law ALLOWING this and seeing that there are ZERO consequences to leading a life of drugs and crime, and that if they do decide to try drugs and steal that it's no biggie. I do not want them to grow up thinking life is a free ride and that we will actually house them and give them everything for free so that they can CONTINUE to use their drugs and steal to get them.

Why don't they throw a couple in Glenmore? Or maybe KLO/Mission area?
Oh, I think I know why.
Don't want to start "upsetting" anyone that lives above the "lower-middle class" demographic.

Just for the record, the proposed project is only 1/2 a block away from Rutland High School and the Middle school! :cuss:

And before everyone starts ranting about "where the services are", Rutland does not have any "core" services
in the area.

Oh well, Rutland already has an undeserved "getto" reputation.
I guess the government is just trying to solidify it.

Where is this going to end? Do we just keep building more and more and more drug houses until we have more drug houses than regular homes? We can't afford to do this and it's just not going to help!!!

All we hear these days is "there is still more we must do, still more work to be done". All that means is there are more and more people getting addicted to drugs these days so we have to built more and more drug dens to sweep them off the streets and allow them to stay addicted but out of sight.

There is only one way to fight this and have any hope of gaining any ground and that is to take a stand AGAINST drug use. To say, we will help you if you are addicted, we will help you get through to the other side and into recovery, we will counsel you, console you, feed and house you BUT you will be going to rehab and putting in YOUR efforts as well to get off the drugs.

I'm tired of being used for this absolute baloney. We need to start looking at this differently and we need to grow a backbone.

This is getting to be pure bull. I think it's time we started to inundate the Provincial Government, Interior Health, the City of Kelowna, the RCMP headquarters, the BC Bar Association and anyone else you can think of with letters to stop the craziness.

Okay, I have to say I'm impressed with Norm Letnick for this.

Thanks for listening, Norm.
PLEASE use spellcheck. If that is too hard, consider installing the Grammarly (free!) app that will not only spellcheck for you (AND offer corrections!) but also make sure that your sentences are grammatically correct.

You're welcome.

Can anyone name me a single place where this "supportive housing" worked, and hasn't turned into drugs and petty crimes nightmares for neighborhoods? Why do our politicians keep pushing this failed model?
These people have to be isolated from the society, and subjected to involuntary rehabilitation, and hard labor. A walled rehab/work camp, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, whould be good. Then, only if and when they come clean, and demostrate solid work ethics, they would be reintroduced to the society. There is no other way.

"just for the record"..
i live in one of those aforementioned areas, and there is 2 supportive housing units (that i know of) here.. one is fairly quiet, and the other has police, ambulance at it at least twice a week. yes, i know that's nothing compared to other areas, but we see it too.
Also, i travel/work in the other areas too (rutland daily, and downtown), and see what is happening there, and am totally disgusted in what i see, and feel for everyone that HAS to put up with it.
Mr Letnick, you have my thumbs up!!

Enough is enough, it is not working.
Stop allowing drugs in these so called shelters.
Stop the madness now before it destroys more lives
And the innocent people living in the neighbourhoods :swear: :swear: :swear: :swear:

You know this is working when I am strongly considering alarm system and cameras at my place.

What has the Okanagan turned into ?!?!?!

We need to bring back real consequences for crimes.

Nothing short of sentry guns mounted on the rooftop would work.

Supportive housing is so half *bleep*... We need a basic minimum income, housing should be a human right and its time to end the war on drugs, decriminalizing them and treating addiction as the health epidemic it truly is... I mean it worked for Portugal.. but nah let's not do that and just continue to complain about "homeless junkie criminals" I mean nothing will changes but it makes some happy to have something to circle jirk and *bleep* about with each other everyday :130:

HAH.

I know a business who has gated in, CCTVed the area where they have garbage bins.
It's gotten so bad with dumpster divers taking everything out and making a mess they wanted to add barbed wire to the fencing but aren't allowed. :(

So will there be requirements for basic minimum income and housing provided?
Like actually work, refrain from committing crimes and rehabing?

Is minimum wage not a basic minimum income? (It is if one has a job ...)
