Positive Things That Are Helping The Homeless

Post by wanderer »

I'd like this topic to be simply about the positive things that are happening for homeless people that many on here are not aware of. I hope that this topic will not devolve into the usual hate filled conversations. Also I hope that the advocates will not use this topic to preach, in a superior tone, their narrow view focused only on the homeless that precludes neighbourhood concerns.

Not all of us who protest the concentration of homeless no barrier housing in Rutland, are without compassion for the plight of homeless people in our city. Unlike some of those who are posting non solutions, or idiotic right wing solutions that have no merit to help the homeless, some of us do want to see the homeless given help. Don't paint us all with the same brush, just as all homeless shouldn't be painted with the same brush, not all homeless are thieves, anti social, or violent. I do feel strongly BC Housing is fragmenting our city, and it really does need to locate any further no barrier housing projects in a different part of Kelowna. I also truly believe ongoing help for the homeless should continue. Create more rehab places, give homeless people a place for public funded private counseling and group meetings to work together through their trauma and addictions, help them to become employable, guide them through courses to help them be employable.

In that line of thought. Congratulations to the 1st group who have graduated from P.E.O.P.L.E. right here in Kelowna.

The event will celebrate graduates from one of the first programs of its kind in Canada: one that offers skills training and meaningful, paid work opportunities for people with lived experiences of homelessness and/or drug use. The first cohort of 30 participants completed learning modules related to communications, conflict resolution, Indigenous histories, financial literacy and harm reduction practices. The participants are now moving into paid employment opportunities that are supporting inclusion, including community beautification, community ambassador roles, communications, and more.

Also congratulations to "PEOPLE Employment Services" for Your Work in helping the homeless become employable: https://www.peopleemploymentservices.com/

I do miss "One Cup At A Time," a coffee shop which was run out of the space on the ground floor of the Carrington House downtown on St Paul ... good people working there and it was always encouraging to meet/talk with the people going through the employment training ...

One of the barristas that came through the last session they had there I am still friends with and she is still happily slinging coffee and keeping herself and her son afloat ...

The downtown patrol are very friendly people. They are doing their best to help move the homeless group along and support those who feel unsafe.

Examples include escorting you to your car, bank etc. Moving folks along sitting in the doorway.

The folks in blue clean up all the gross stuff they leave behind.

I think these folks are providing a wonderful service in a very difficult situation. They are not in the politics they are doing what they are told

I think that is a positive

I think it was Safeway recently stepped up and and is donating more of there unused baked goods to food bank.

There is also a local program where folks will come harvest your unwanted fruit / veggies and donate to food bank.

This would help both families in need and homeless, another positive

It may sound odd relating this to homeless but I really like the Pianos in Parks programs.

I often see people who look like they are homeless playing the pianos, some of them are so talented and the music is beautiful. There is often the same person who plays in the tunnel at the City Park and you can hear his melodies echo through the tunnel and into the park. It's wonderful. Never underestimate what a person may have to offer based on their physical appearance or social status.

I often hear the ebony/ivory tinkling in Roxby Square, it is most enjoyable and I appreciate anyone who can play the piano.
It is a wonderful program for anyone to use.
