Are We a City of the Future? Or are we a Mess ?

To cap my comments of Kelowna.
Here is one glaring example of what passes for thinking by a member of our city council:
In a story posted on Castanet tonight, councillor Mohini Singh in joining her fellow councillors, expresses her concerns about a design of an apartment building approved for the corner of Laurier and Ethel Streets:
"I have real concerns about the look of the exterior, but if it changes to something better, the costs will go up"
Along with Singh, councillor Brad Seiban stimulates the thought process by passing more comments on the terrible bland and ugly shed like buildings that are being constructed in the city: "there seems to be a lot of this type of construction.Maybe we should pay attention to this for future buildings"
I think the above comments provides some of the answer as to where Kelowna is headed.

Here is the story.

I had to look to see if April Fools Day Came early this year.
That building design is straight out of the early 70's :200:
The sad thing is they are ripping down similar looking buildings regularly all over Kelowna.

They're not. The city is offering exclusivity to a winning bidder.

These E-bikes are good for entertainment only & add another good weather fun factor for Kelowna.

Getting the Government to approve these gizmo's to be on our streets would be a lawsuit waiting to happen ?

But if our City give 1 company the exclusive privilege & a grant it should work fine ?

I have mentioned it before, Kelowna new buildings are super high hi-rises without adequate parking that locals don't buy and apartments/condo's look like LEGO buildings. What are (CoK) they thinking?

Well the mayor and supported by talk radio host, the other day says we need all these new buildings to house the 20 thousand new residents that will be moving to Kelowna.
This causes me to wonder.
Many of those units built to date are vacation units(advertised as such) and supported by council.
Those proposed with the majority small, 1 bedroom, some 210 square feet.
Are we to assume, all the people coming to Kelowna will not have families?.It appears so.
Another is the cheap construction that is proliferating.
Shed roofs, plywood like cladding on the exterior along with tiny apartments are cheaper to build.
One example, the 5 storey Worman building(Mayer off Springfield) is a glaring example of cheap construction.
Worman, usually noted for his heritage and attractive designs has jumped on the bandwagon.
Not one redeeming feature. No design qualities, box like, no balconies all windows tiny and the same size.
Rents? $1000.00 a month.
This is what the city rubber stamps.
Sad!

Fantastic central green will add another stack of suites Bernard will put another stack of Apartments, these will all have lack of car spaces to make walking and public transport needed. Shopping supermarkets will be absolutely needed. Has anyone thought what will happen when the only supermarket left on Bernard sells the land and more buildings go up. Just asking.

One thing that Kelowna does right that I miss is the multi-use trail networks year round! I miss the KVR and the Crawford trail network! When I was at my worst I hammered so much of my frustration out on those trails....

This is what I love and miss having left Kelowna!

Also if you head up Gillard FSR and head west on the KVR you're greeted with panoramic views of the Valley!

I'm kicking myself for never making it up to the top of Little White but yeah.

Further to the latest and final build at central Green|
There will be 2-6 storey buildings.which is contrary to the original plan approved by council.
It breaks down as follows:
32 micro suites;22 studio suites;139-1 bedroom suites.(maybe 200 square feet?)
21 2 bedroom suites.No accommodation for families.
The original plan called for more than 7 hundred suites
To help funnel all the residents into the downtown to all the jobs, the city is spending over 5 million on a overpass.
Maybe it will have a bike lane?!! [icon_lol2.gif]

I just went by the old Keg on Lawrence and Water and what a demolition.
The original building is hollowed out and has only 3 walls left.
No recycling of any of the old old 2 by 10 or 12 beams, which were at least 20 feet long.
So sad.
Just destroy it all and take it to the dump.
