Old McD's

Old McD's

Postby CrystalCity » Nov 30th, 2020, 3:16 pm

If the city of Kelowna is serious about developing the site in a way that benefits the community civically, why not turn it into a Speakers' Corner, with a podium, benches, maybe a water refill station, community art (such as that artsy "welcome" sign, flag poles, bike locks, and parking? It's close enough to the highway that anyone who wants to protest or demonstrate can do so while being both seen and not dangerously interfering with traffic. Have some established rules in the area, like what London has at Hyde Park.

A wet facility is the most logical choice.
It's unofficially all that lot has been the last 20+ years

Sell it for big money to a developer. For what they paid for it, they can sit on it for a while, and flip it for more money.

the city will sell it. it is pretty much useless for anything other than apartments . there is no access off the highway but im sure mission group knows someone at city hall and they could get that amended . as for the city using it.... for what? we dont need another park a block away from city park and right on the side of a busy highway

I read the city wanted it to be some sort of gateway landmark coming off the bridge. I agree that a full park wouldn't be a good idea, but a soapbox square where people can officially and safely demonstrate that is close to where they collect anyway is feasible. It backs onto green space, so even if subdivided and a portion is kept as civic space might work as a landmark. It'd be nice to see where the property lines are, because it seems like a large parcel.

Oh gawd another spot so close to the highway and lake that can be a nightmare to navigate as it is with the people begging for money on the median - no to green space for tents to pop up. There were 2 in that area tonight.

I'm surprised tents haven't already been set up there. A paved soapbox square where people can set up their apple crate and crow about the evils masks, meat, and marketing (or is it Marxism this week?) might keep squatters away while also allowing people to enjoy the beaches, parks, and even T'orchard Park mall without demonstrators getting in their faces.

I thought the tents usually appear where the developers want to drive down the land value :135:
