When I first saw this story, I wondered, could this be the guy we used to call the "highway man"?
He certainly looks like him, but a bit heavier.
There was a guy who used to walk along the highway every day from the trailer parks by Daimler, to what was at the time Extra Foods. He would wear funny hats sometimes.

That's because in court they use the language uttered in any attack ... it's in the trial transcript so media can report what was said without censuring.

Not sure if he was called the highway man but he did walk daily to all parts of Westbank plus the occasional trip into Kelowna.

That sounds like him. I saw him every day for a long time, always walking between Berkley Estates and Extra Foods.
At some point, he started wearing silly hats. One day he was sporting a full on sparkly sombrero.

I ran into him in the store a few times, there was definitely something scary about him.
I said hello one time and he gave me a definite serial killer vibe.

Do you know him personally? You have no idea what personal demons he's fighting. His mother doubts he'll see the light of day. She thinks he'll be found not guilty due to mental health issues and be confined to a forensic psychiatric hospital for the rest of his life.

Oh I don't think the point was that he was a great, caring soul. I think the point was that he is most definitely suffering from some sort of mental health issues. Without that, there is no way to explain what awful things he's done.

I have to assume that he wasn't in full control of his actions, and likely suffers more than most people reading these comments do.

One doesn't just behave the way he was alleged to have done without some reason for it.

This doesn't mean he deserves our admiration and respect. It just means that we must understand that we don't know the full story here; we don't know what demons he battles in his head. People with very real and scary mental health issues walk among us. Most don't try to kill their elderly mom, but that is just a sign of the state of his mind.

I feel sadness and sympathy towards his mother. I don't know what to think of him.

It's called checks and balances. Regardless of the charges, a person is entitled to legal representation in a court of law.
