Freedom of Information Request to Cost $2000.00

Postby Mrmarvingardens » Jan 22nd, 2021, 1:40 pm

The residents of the Northside area of the Central Okanagan regional District want some answers as to why a picnic shelter cost $100,000.
Caille Simpson of of the Community association made the simple Freedom of Information request request to CORD, asking for the details of the project contract that was awarded to a Squamish contractor.
She was told the information would cost $1,997.50.
She said, "there seems to be a lack of transparency from CORD.
I have a question: should such information not be available free to taxpayers?
Certainly to Wayne Carson who is the elected director for the area.
The chair of CORD is Gail Given.

Not sure, but the charge might be unlawful. I vaguely remember some other case when authorities tried to play that $$ game to circumvent the FOIA, and it was struck down by a judge.

In my opinion actual Costs would be a fair price.
Something recent like that should be $50 plus printing supplies or less since it should be mostly just clicking on the file and select print every page.
A 50 year old file buried in the archives may take several days to find so it should cost more.

It doesn't really matter how much it costs to make requested information available. They are public servants, taxpayer funded, not some for-profit commercial outfit. Responding to FOIA requests is a part of their duties, already paid for from taxes.

Why should it even cost $50?

$50 in wages is 2 - 3 hours of work for most people. It's going to take someone 5 minutes to find the info and 0.05 cents to email it.

If the city fails to do proper accounting then that is their issue.

I have over 100,000 engineering drawings on my server. I can find a specific one in less than 5 minutes.

Some companies and government departments will say they have to charge some exorbitant fee hoping whoever is asking for the info will backdown and say the hell with it. But when whoever wants the information says ok, not a problem they start with how long it'll take, don't know if we have enough personnel to find the info in a reasonable time, etc.

Some FOI requests may require payment of a fee. Fees are charged for the following services:

Locating, retrieving and producing the record
Preparing the record for disclosure
Shipping and handling the record
Providing a copy of the record
Fees are not charged for:

The first three hours spent locating and retrieving a record
Time spent removing information from a record
Your own personal information

It doesn't sound right to me. If I don't have that money to pay, where is the "freedom" to obtain information? Am I not entitled to it then? Freedom of Information Act is all about holding governments accountable. Putting a price tag on it reeks of them evading accountability.

well if someone puts together a Gofundme, I'd be more then happy to contribute to the cause. Story's all over the media now. Inquiring minds want to know. 2 grand should be a piece of cake.

You pay 2 grand now, and they'll bump it up to 20 next time, then 200. It's not about the real cost (if any), it's about being cost prohibitive to whoever is seeking it.

hmm, it's almost like they don't want people to know that information
I don’t care what they’re going to say. Let the storm rage on.

If they think $2k is a reasonable cost for a little information, no wonder they spent so much building the picnic shelter.

I would say, :cuss: money away (among other shady stuff) is the exact reason why FOI requests have a hefty price tag.

I think they live in a different Economic Universe than most of us..
I give an example, say I was a person who often gave advice very important advice on certain subjects..
SO WHEN ASKED FOR ADVICE... I would say sure I will answer that , but I need 250 bucks for every answer... :200:
That is what these people think like..

They forget they are being paid to do a job, and that on a heavy workload day, that they still get paid the same..
I think it's called salary.....not gravy..
I'd like to help You OUT,
Which way did You come in??
