There are quite a few very tall trees near the hospital. A couple of oaks and a maple just north of Royal. Would be interesting to know how tall they are. Years ago the maple had been pruned way down, but is again huge.
Driving down Pandosy St. you might not notice them but if you are walking to the hospital they are very noticeable.
Considering there is a tree protection bylaw being looked at, would the parks department have some info?

Great photos of the tree on the old Minstrel Cafe property. That was a great place. Many a lunch under that tree back in the day!

So what are the numbers in that link, tree circumference?

It's a beautiful tree but by no means the tallest in Kelowna.

LOL. There are taller trees right across the street. The one diagonally opposite across intersection is much taller.

The yellow cedar on the map is a foot bigger in diameter than the one I cut in the back end of the Brandywine drainage near Whistler.

Currently reading Big Lonely Doug. About the second largest Douglas Fir in BC. Interesting read being once upon a time on the " other side" ( faller)

Regardless what "side" one is on, the forest is an amazing place. When in Vancouver, take a walk through Lighthouse Park in West Van, the only area in the lower mainland never to have been logged.
I'd be thinking the tallest trees in the valley would be Ponderosa Pines growing in a good site.

The numbers are basically a combination of height, circumference, and crown width.

Tree Score (Total points) = trunk circumference (in.) + tree height (ft.) + ¼ average crown spread (ft.)

BTW, here is a list of the same tree species, but by tree height. Note that for many species, the tallest is not the same tree as the one with the highest tree score. Also, red cedars have by far the highest tree scores because of their huge trunks, but are far shorter than sitka spruce and coastal Douglas fir. DBH means "diameter at 4.5 ft above the ground."

I agree. We have one in our yard that is very tall, much more so than the old Minstrel Cafe tree.

Per the map above, the tallest Ponderosa in BC (at Coldstream) is 165 ft tall while the tallest interior Dougie Fir in the province (at Princeton) is 162 ft tall, so yup, Ponderosa is slightly taller, at least at the extreme end, although, it's quite close.

There's a ponderosa pine on the north face of mount boucherie that's got to be close to 150 ft tall. Just a massive tree that's twice the height of every other tree around it.
