Where do people come up with these ideas - Knox Mtn Gondola
https://www.castanet.net/news/Letters/3 ... -a-gondola
Let's do some math:
- Cost to build a gondola varies dramatically - but a little googling has landed me at $20M as a "safe guess" if we look at CDN dollars and constantly raising construction costs.
- Cost to run a gondola with staffing, maintenance, etc - Approx $1M a year.
- Population of Kelowna 137,000
Building this Gondola will cost every man, women, and child in Kelowna $146. Or approximately $584 per household.
To offset the cost of running the Gondola, we'd need to charge $10 per ride and hope 100,000 rides are sold in a year. Or have every household pay an additional $30 a year in taxes.
Personally - for $584 I could think of a lot of things my family and I would rather do than to spend $10 each on Gondola rides.
THAT is the reason why you don't see Gondola's everywhere Bill.

Don't forget the wonderful idea of Gondola rides through our flooded city with Canals. Oh never mind that was an April fools joke right?TylerM4 wrote:https://www.castanet.net/news/Letters/3 ... -a-gondola

Sounds like someone can’t handle the hike...
It's that special time of year when conservatives stupidly act like they're not allowed to say Merry Christmas.

Thought the same thing. The hike is good for you and the view more rewarding when you hiked for it.Pappywinkle wrote:Sounds like someone can’t handle the hike...
Are the gates still open in the summer? Can people with mobility problems still drive up if needed?

From what I see, the linked article was just a reader's opinion. No one is seriously talking about building a gondola (yet).

First, we build the monorail.
Only then we build the gondola.

I would suggest, we first build some portal to reality for our governments to use.Even Steven wrote:First, we build the monorail.

I'm on the fence between the monorail (actually the modern equivalent is the hyperloop) and the canal system.Even Steven wrote:First, we build the monorail.

Both are extremely viable methods of transportation. The monorail would probably be faster, but I've been waiting for an excuse to actually show my pleasure craft operator cert.

Guess what it’s great exercise putting 1 foot in front of the other.
Only a lazy jack needs gondola.

I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

Considering how nice the past year has been to visit Knox I'm hoping they keep it closed. I can see how someone might want options for the mobility-challenged but there have to be other lookout options for those that require a car to get there.
A gondola idea is cute, but unless they marry it with a zipline down I ain't gonna fork over $10 as suggested.

I'd do a few 20 buck trips if they supplied the racer at the top .

How about a Mountain Coaster coming downhill?
I feel we're missing some fun that we could be taking advantage of given our geography. If there were no cost to taxpayers and this was all a privately funded project it would be OK by me.
Take a gondola up and have a fun coaster ride down. Or even perhaps, skip the Gondola and have somebody drive you up.
I can already hear a few the voices of those who would object. But I think the mountain and park are big enough to support something like this. Lots of room to roam on the mountain if you want to avoid people having fun and noise. I say that as a fan of hiking up the mountain. It would be a hoot watching people going downhill or doing it myself.
This one might be a little intense for me, but I like the idea...
