Where do people come up with these ideas - Knox Mtn Gondola

I feel we're missing some fun that we could be taking advantage of given our geography. If there were no cost to taxpayers and this was all a privately funded project it would be OK by me.

Take a gondola up and have a fun coaster ride down. Or even perhaps, skip the Gondola and have somebody drive you up.

I can already hear a few of the voices of those who would object. But I think the mountain and park are big enough to support something like this. Lots of room to roam on the mountain if you want to avoid people having fun and noise. I say that as a fan of hiking up the mountain. It would be a hoot watching people going downhill or doing it myself.

This one might be a little intense for me, but I like the idea...

There used to be one up in the Vernon area, maybe Silverstar? Went on it years ago but I believe it's long gone now. I remember it from the late 70's, if I'm remembering accurately.

Bill is also a bit off in his estimate of 100 Gondolas operating at ski hills within 30km of here. Big White and Silverstar would be closest and both have one gondola each... although neither one is within 30 km of Kelowna.

Even giving him the benefit of the doubt on these two, I'm not sure where he thinks the other 98 are.

I would suggest, we first build some portal to reality for our governments to use.

What not combine them? I'd go for a ride on the Mondala!

Revelstoke Mountain has a coaster like this, it's a blast.

I posted this years ago on a similar thread, likely on a Rail Trail thread.

I even went so far as looking into the investment end of the enterprise.
Methinks designed more for a more level grade than for mountain use
though.

A gondola for Knox Mountain?
Another crazy idea.I bet this one came from the same person that thinks the big ugly building and 2 hundred boats called the Yacht Club thinks it is a great idea also.

Lightspeed has answered the question:

A roller coaster?

Yup that would certainly be much more wildlife friendly, than the current road the OP wants to see closed to vehicular traffic, supposedly for the sake of the wildlife.

There was one up at Tillicum and there was also one just north of Atlantis Waterslides in the 80s/90s.

Yep, the one at Tillicum was concrete. I enjoyed going on it.
The one near highway was rather small and if memory serves me rather pricy... basically highway tourists trap... kinda like slide between Oyama & Winfield on old highway.

Yup, that it was.

Okanagan Bobsled was the name, at least for a while IIRC. Went there quite often, ended up going off the track a few times [icon_lol2.gif]

Ah yes, Adventureland. IIRC that was actually the first fun park in the OK Valley.

I think Bill needs to dream bigger. Put it up Okanagan Mountain Park. Knox is already crowded.

That would be more to scale with the Sea to Sky in Squamish; slightly more vertical rise.

OMP is under utilized and there could be a much better trail network that is usable in all 4 seasons. Bike, Hike, fish, Rock Climb, Snowshoe, XC Skiing, Ice skating, roller coaster, waterslide, plus....

With connection to the KVR it would make a downtown kelowna to downtown penticton bike ride spectacular and realistic for casual riders. Out Lakeshore, gondola up to divide lake, roll down the hill overlooking the vineyards to penticton. Connect the other way to Myra Canyon for an out and back or loop.

The Sea to Sky charges $10 for a ride down if you hike up. $35 for a ride up. $99 for a seasons pass. 200k-300k annual users and a construction costs of $7.6M.

Burnaby is now getting a Gondola for their mountain. If Kelowna doesn't jump on the bandwagon it may get left behind in the Gondola race.

And any wise government should do everything in their power (and beyond) to avoid such a calamity of losing that epic race. Just bloody, don't give them ideas ... :-X
