Winter solstice

Post by pdevries9 »

Just pointing out...
We are reaching Winter Solistice!!!
The MIDDLE of winter!

We're 6 weeks in and only 6 more to go.
Feb 2, Ground hog day, and i'll be welcoming Spring

Noticed there's a solstice party in Penticton, they are going to be "welcoming" winter.
I agree, its just that its the middle of winter - its not fall out there!

Last time I checked, Winter “solstice” is the first day of Winter. You have 3 more months which is roughly 12 weeks to go. Don’t hold your breath about Feb 2nd and welcoming spring :D

It's good to view the winter solstice in a positive way, the days will be getting longer.
I'm posting this from Traditional lands of the British Empire & the current Lands of The Dominion of Canada.
I also give thanks for this ethos richness bestowed on us via British Colonialism.

Winter Solstice is traditionally marked as Midwinter - Dec 21 for the Northern Hemisphere and Jun 21 for the Southern Hemisphere. Respectively, Midsummer, specifically Midsummer's Eve or St John's Day is traditionally celebrated around the Summer Solstice (Jun 21 in the Northern Hemisphere).

Solstices is all about were the Sun is in relationship with Earth.
Northern Hemisphere
March 21 first day of Spring (Sun is over the Equator)
June 21 first day of Summer (Sun is north or over Tropic of Cancer)
September 21 first day of Fall (Sun is back over the Equator)
December 21 first day of Winter (Sun is over the Tropic of Capricorn)

Of course Southern Hemisphere is the opposite.
December is first day of Summer
March is first day of Fall
June is first day of Winter
September is first day of Spring
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

Actually it is not.

There are two, and neither name the winter solstice as the middle of winter. The winter solstice in the northern hemisphere happens on Dec 21st or 22nd (mostly the 21st), depending on the year. This year it is tomorrow at 1:47 PM PST.

Each season has an astronomical start and a meteorological start. The astronomical start is based on the position of the sun in relation to the earth. The meterorological is based on our 12 month civil calendar as well as the annual temperature cycle.
