Is the new Kelowna Mayor confused about snow budget?
Lets see if I have this right.
We are told the budget for snow removal is over budget.
Last year, we are told there was 5 hundred thousand left in the budget.
Today, Mayor Tom Dyas says council gave the snow budget $200 thousand to add to their budget.
Ok, facts are stubborn things and statistics are pliable.
Now, can we just get on with getting the snow off the streets!

The old budget was in place before he was elected.
Blame your creep buddy basran there.
Glad tom gave snow removal 200k, some drivers were talking about going and syphoning gas to keep trucks on road
Cheese with the whine?

Re: Is the new Kelowna Mayor confused about snow budget?
It is noteworthy that with some controversy,$200 thousand dollars was added to the snow removal budget in budget deliberations for 2023.
The budget has little to do with who is mayor, although it is fortunate the last one is gone.
For some reason, snow removal funding and as I have stated earlier, those responsible for operations keep changing.
There seems to be some kind of plan after the snow starts to fall, with budget shortfalls advertised right after.
Maybe too, many Kelownians seem to expect too much, referring to it as Shangri la and Palm Springs North, which it is not.Yep, and it is not the third largest city in B.C.

Re: Is the new Kelowna Mayor confused about snow budget?
Since snowfall records are no longer kept in Kelowna, Vernon, Summerland, and Osoyoos I'm forced to use the Penticton airport to compare.
Normal amount of snowfall in a year = 58.7 cm
So far this winter: 29.8 (Nov) + 35 (Dec) + trace amount (Jan so far) = 64.8 cm
So BEFORE January the Okanagan has already hit the amount of normal snowfall.
And how does this compare to the winter of 2021/22?
2.4 cm (Nov) + 46.1 (Dec) + 20.6 (Jan) + 4.0 (Feb) = 73.1 cm
Given the budget is set based on an average snowfall year, they will exceed the budget every other year on average.
And 2020/21?
4.5 cm (Oct) + 5.6 (Nov) + 18.8 (Dec) + 5.2 (Jan) + 6.8 (Feb) = 40.9 cm So below average

I'm not totally convinced that the amount of snowfall in any given season is a true indicator for budget purposes. I think the number of snow events should also be considered. Afterall, I'm sure doesn't cost much more to plow 3~4" than 6~8". Storage and removal, obviously would add a premium tho.

That's what she said.
But yes, it's true that it's a little more efficient to get all your snow at once, but not as much as you think. They start plowing right away so if it's 6 inches vs. 3, they might plow 4 times instead of 2 (for the main arteries anyway). For side streets it will be less since they might not get to them until a day or two later.
Total snowfall is a good proxy for the number of events though.

So, we need to up what is budgeted for snow removal.
What doesn't get used, rolls over into say a summer fire/flood fund. Disaster preparedness.
We just have to get the city hall folks to adhere to the budget, and maybe trim some of the useless crap from it.

Hereās an idea, how about having Kelowna residents actually learn 2 valuable lessons.
1) Learn how to drive in winter conditions.
2) Learn how to pick proper winter tires.
Damn, your right this would be to easy. Letās just wait for city work crew to plow the street.

Tell that to my employer. I donāt even own a personal vehicle. Other than motorcycles. But drive everyday for work. Merrit , salmon arm. . This week to Oliver. However no tires will get you down the hill I live on unless it has been plowed sanded and sanded and sanded.GordonH wrote: āJan 4th, 2023, 9:25 pm Hereās an idea, how about having Kelowna residents actually learn 2 valuable lessons.

I'm convinced that anyone who will complain about snow removal is the type of person who will complain about anything.
Snow falls. We can't stop it. It's expensive to clear it. The city gets the job done as it can. Time to move to a different climate if snow on the roads is that big of a problem for you.
