Reduced visibility at YLW during July and August requiring diversions does happen and is usually related to wildfire smoke

Another bad day at the airport for flights in and out.
When fog happens there must be magnet built into YLW, because that area is fog collector.
This has been occurring at YLW for decades. I remember my parents flying back from Costa Rica back in the mid 90's and the plane had to circle above Kelowna for almost an hour before the fog was light enough they could attempt a descend through it. It failed on the first attempt and tried again and managed to land safely.

Poor location for an Airport as it's in a low-lying field where dense fog will naturally collect. The same issue occurs in Glenmore which back in the early days of Kelowna was called by the locals "Starvation Flats" because of the dense fog would collect at the bottom of the valley and would damage the Glenmore crops causing loss of production. It's one of the main reasons why the Glenmore area was taken out of the ALR and allowed to be developed into the big neighborhood it is.

Nice to have a big acting airport with not all the goodies...
When the airport expands and has a hotel on site.. as that is in the works.. we can brag about that.. but for now an A320 which is a newer airplane has to head to Vancouver to unload...!!!!

The A321 actually just celebrated its 30th Anniversary of its Madian Flight yesterday (Mar 11) - it's also just a lengthened A320 which first flew 6 years prior, so it's not that new. Regardless, instrumentation and amenities are airline specific.

The problem with YLW is the mountains surrounding the airport, this is simply a geographical reality that restricts what kind of equipment YLW can install.

Weather related diversions, they happen many times a day at airports all over the world.
