Freedom of speech in Kelowna/BC

Post by polelady »

Interesting to see the civic officials are out of ammo... so try this last step

https://www.castanet.net/news/Kelowna/4 ... m-Rallies-

In a petition filed Monday, the city names protest organizer David Lindsay
Seems to me..that Mr Lindsay is a thorn to the city bucket.. and so be it.... do the ticket, and court thing as per our laws require ! And yes it takes time... just how the justice moves in a snails pace
BUT to take it to court for an injunction to cover anything not bringing in tax dollars seems abit far to much
I for one do not go down there on the weekends... plain and simple if you do not like the drama do not got to the show and *bleep*.... I am sure lot of people can walk around the mess... and so on... if the media and city give them coverage it will encourage more......
OH well just how it goes....

Yup...

We're a long way away from the freedoms and rights fought and died for by our forefathers...

Authoritarianism evident here, by one small tap at a time, on the fascist wedges being inserted into the trees of freedom of speech...

I wonder what Hitler's, or Mussolini's, or Trudeaus' neighbors would have done if they'd known how far out of control things were going to get...

Why should this group not be subject to the bylaws of the city? What makes them so special that they should be able to hold events without permission and permits?

Disrupting business's, traffic and people as well.

I agree. The City has been very lenient with this group of folks and it's time to get them gone. I fully support the right for this group - or any group - to protest as long as they have the proper permits and abide by the By-laws.

I found it a bit amusing to see them burn Saturday after Saturday of their lives, year after year.

Amen to this. Freedom of speech is one thing, but private pulpits used for hawking your wares is another. Time to give this corner of Stuart Park back to regular people to enjoy.

I agree that they should be following bylaws and not causing disruption as such to general members of the public BUT all of the above can be said of our ever growing homeless population who camp out on street, in alleys and harass members of the public and are a disruption to any business that operates downtown where they congregate. I have seen bylaw and police moving them on but they are back hours later. The events that the council are attempting to stop are once a week. The homeless are 24/7.

Bit of a difference there given that the protests require a permit, whereas I doubt they issue permits for the homeless to be a public nuisance.

Well, in actual fact it has only been 1 yr.
But still, that is 52 Saturdays.
Do these people not have better things to do? Are they giving up spending almost 2 months this past year with their children/ spouses.
I know how much I can accomplish in 2 months, even if it is just on home improvements/car maintenance/learning something new like a hobby.

That's 8 X 2 week vacations for this year, lost.

Our forefathers would be embarrassed by these folks in the park wasting their freedom on protesting science-based medical treatment to save our over-extended healthcare system.

A true attack on democracy and a push for authoritarianism is certainly prevalent, however, it comes from the people attending the park rallies. The small minority in the park wants to assume control and tell the rest of us how to live, they want to make the rules. In this country, that is done at the ballot box. Instead of wasting their weekends protesting they should be working on creating their own political party or helping a party which would ignore all scientific COVID vaccine findings in favour of medical autonomy. At least then if they came to power democratically their COVID vaccine stance would be something we voted for.
