That pretty much throws out the idea that it's the "city folks" who are supporting Farmers' Markets.

$3.00/head??? You can buy a pack of organic starter bulbs for that and plant it in a hell strip giving you free garlic for the future. Maybe that's why the price was so high...a lot of people buying bulbs to grow their own. I raised up my hell strip last year and harvested 40 bulbs this year. It apparently appreciated all the pistachio shells I threw into my compost of coffee and banana peels.

For food you are better off going directly to the farmer and cheaper too. Lots of places, look on Byrns Rd, go up into East Kelowna.

Isn't the Farmers Market going directly to them? I thought that was the whole point of going to the market?

Haven't found it cheaper for a long time. Fresher but not cheaper like it used to be.

Some people in this topic were saying the prices at the Farmer's Market were higher than the grocery stores. I was suggesting an alternative way to buy from farmers that might be cheaper. I know the places on Byrnes Rd are cheaper.

Well all you have to do is call it "organic" and you can double the price.

Ever wonder what the difference is between an organic potato and a regular one? :135: I have.

Could be but haven't been there for a couple of years since we had a disagreement with the owner about really bad corn we got there.

Her customer service was worse than the corn! lol

Going to the actual farm reduces the transportation costs for the farmer, definitely. Basic laws of economics and price discrimination apply at the Farmers' Market. The people who go there are simply willing to pay more.

Yes, I imagine there is also a social component to being among the throngs walking at the Farmers Market. It's too many people in one place for me.

There's a "social" component? I've never once talked to anyone beyond the vendor. It often appears that those who do go keep within the social group they arrived with.

There goes my romantic Hallmark Movie dream of meeting the love of my life going to the Farmers' Market.

Is there anything more Kelowna than a romantic Hallmark Movie? The writers strike is on, how will anyone entertain themselves now???

I find the dichotomy of the location a little weird. To have something related to farming and crafts surrounded by nothing but concrete. At least with the Dilworth location you had the Greenway to look at. Maybe it's just me though, I dunno.

what are they going to do when they start the construction of the new parkinson rec center and the parking lot is a mess for 3 years ? seems like a great place to park and use the overpass until they go full construction mode

Well not a problem for me. I have zero desire to go tripping over mindless masses, simply to purchase overpriced produce.

It's not as though there aren't better local options, in season that is, like Don O Ray, and a couple of others on Benvoulin.

Seems like produce isn't a great money maker. I noticed that the people who moved into the old Quality Greens on Spall Road, have shut the doors already, though I can't say I'm surprised.

When you go out of your way to shop at a dedicated produce store, you kind of expect top notch quality, and that was rarely the case.
