What led to the Glen Clark resigning and the massive ousting of the NDP in 2001?

In March 1999, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police executed a search warrant and searched the Clark household.[4] The media was tipped off about the raid and television news showed live, primetime coverage of the premier pacing inside his house while the search was conducted. Two weeks later the RCMP conducted a search of the Premier's Office.[5]
The subsequent investigation spawned intense coverage by the media.[6] However, subsequent coverage also exposed numerous inaccuracies in the way the story was initially portrayed, with some critics alleging a media or RCMP conspiracy to smear him for ideological reasons.
[7]

Clark resigned suddenly on the night of August 21, 1999, following allegations that he had accepted favours (in the form of free renovations worth $10,000, which he had actually paid for) from Dimitrios Pilarinos in return for approving a casino application.[8] He was later formally charged with committing breach of trust, a criminal offence.[9]

Conflict of interest commissioner H.A.D. Oliver concluded in 2001 that Clark had violated conflict of interest laws in British Columbia.[6] However, Clark was acquitted of all criminal charges by the Supreme Court of British Columbia on August 29, 2002,[9] with Justice Elizabeth Bennett ruling that while Clark had unwisely left himself open to a perception of unethical behaviour, there was no solid evidence that he had actually done anything illegal.[10]

Of course, by the time Clark was cleared, the cause was lost and the NDP was reduced to only 2 leg members. Of note though, in the election of 2005, the NDP led by Carole James won 33 seats back to become the Official opposition.

Shame on West Kelowna to persist in voting for the parachuted in Premier L'amour de Camera who doesn't even live there and runs the most corrupt government in Canada, displacing Quebec as the most corrupt - thanks to the Charbonneau Commission!!

^^ Flaming: Clark was cleared of the criminal charges but he was found to have violated the conflict of interest laws (as your article says). Also, Glen Clark resigned in August of 1999 and the election wasn't until 2001 so the NDP certainly had time to recover with a new leader. Gordon Campbell in 2011 was probably more unpopular than Glen Clark in 1999 but the Liberals still rebounded and won the 2013 election with Christy Clark.

I agree that Glen Clark's conflict of interest and poor judgment played a role in the NDP's defeat but keep in mind that before the scandal the NDP had already lost the popular vote to Campbell and the Liberals in the 1996 election (41.82% to 39.45%). The NDP were almost wiped out in 2001 and it was running a bad government that did them in.

Excellent point . Anyone holding a mortgage should be praying for the libs . Property values tend to suffer when people leave the province and business shuts down

^^ Yes and if it's already set for a downshift, I shudder to think what the actual outcome would be under an NDP government. They've not propelled any province I'm aware of to heights of prosperity.

If they do get in, prepare for another BC credit rating downgrade!

Yes you're right, it's taken the Liberals about 15yrs to get the bankruptcy rate back to where it was when the NDP first got voted in.
It takes a lot of time to clean up messes indeed, and that's but one example.

When I moved here from Ontario in 97, it was like going back 10 years in time. And costs. Not now.

already apologizing for the NDP's inevitable failures. Not to worry though, the NDP are already ensuring a fifth straight embarrassing defeat so might as well just go back to the tried and true Christy bashing rather than admit and acknowledge that this alone will never get the sad-sack NDP elected.

So what do you figure the odds are, that the cost of living in Ontario has remained the same as 1997?

Gasoline was cheaper across Canada in 97 too.

One big handicap you guys have, is posting negative stuff, and never ever putting it into proper context.

Must be a class offered to NDP insiders. [icon_lol2.gif]
