Oysters recalled in B.C.

Does anyone know why they're growing oysters in Richmond now? Were the oysters (or oyster spat) infected with those biotoxins before they left the oyster beds on eastern Vancouver Island?

Are they growing oysters? Albion Farms and Fisheries Ltd. is a distributor from what I understand so who are the suppliers? They certainly aren't the only dealers based in Richmond.

Before I retired from fishing, Albion's headquarters was in downtown Vancouver, Union Bay oysters, of course, came from the plant at Union Bay on Vancouver Island. There were a lot of oyster farms up in that area. This news story is the first I've heard that wholesalers were getting their product from Richmond. I'm just wondering if the oysters are being transported to Richmond and then kept in the water there until the wholesalers need them. If so, is that where they're picking up the toxins, or are they already infected before they leave the Island?

With only two distributors mentioned, I would think the toxins were at their plant - just my guess though.

So totally agree!!!

Raw oysters bars a delight, smoked - hmmm hmmm good. Any which way I love eating them. Any shellfish actually. Or fish, guess I like meat in general.

^^Try West Coast mussles!! Don't buy those things from PEI.

Pesto pasta and West Coast Mussels are unbelievable!! October, November, December and January are the seasons to buy the fresh fat juicy ones. In Kelowna, ask John at the Codfather to get some in from Salt Spring Island.

Wash the mussels, and remove the byssuss threads (they use them to anchor themselves) and steam only until the shells gape open. Don't boil to death!! Remove the meat - you can use some of the juice for boiling the pasta. Mix cooked pasta and quality pesto (I use Classico) with the mussels... Yumm...

Matters not... we need to keep our waters clean so we can enjoy oysters, clams, crab, mussels, pacific salmon and other treasures of the sea.

^^The edible part of an abilone is the muscle I understand. Which I have eaten and can compare the muscle fibers to wood fibers you would find from a power saw through birch wood that had been soaked in clam juice. It was not enjoyable.

The insides of the shell were much more interesting.

What I ate can't be compared to anything else - was something I will always remember - absolutely delicious (but that was 30 years ago).

That may be true in Haida Gwaii, but not in Richmond.
