^^^^ I really don't get this attack on the wealthy who can afford higher end homes. It seems many of the left, NDG slant feel they should be taxed excessively because they have wealth to pay for the issues in Vancouver.
I know many that have taken out student loans, gone to post secondary schooling and ended up with terrific stimulating work and the remuneration was such they could afford some nice things in life. So why should their hard work and sacrifices pay for others that have made decisions where the remuneration they receive does not afford the ability to live in VERY high cost jurisdictions. Move for crying out loud. I'd love to Live in West Van for example but guess what, can't afford it. Simplistic I suppose but this government taxing the second homes for off shore, ok with that really, as well as others who have "vacation homes" to pay for their pet projects for the votes they received is just another attack from the NDG on the wealthy. People are wealthy usually for a reason....they worked for it... Communism/socialism does not work.
( governments should have a social conscious though and help those that do need it. Separate the free-loaders from the ones truly in need)
This budget is just another tax and spend indicative of the NDP and I truly expect their modest projected budget surplus of $200+ million will end up being a typical NDP deficit this time next year if they are not punted first.

I love this strange myth that wealthy people work harder. Actually, most people work hard in this society. We expect the wealthy to pay a larger portion of taxes because they have benefited from a society that has allowed them to accumulate wealth.

Considering how much the leftist crazies hate Americans, it's baffling how, when convenient, they latch onto US propaganda as though it were the Holy Grail itself. I guess that flow of money to Leap Zealots from US-based Tides and the other Soros/Rockefeller orgs gets these NDP/SJWs rather blind to their own (stated) convictions. As long as that money comes from someone else, the leftists are piddling themselves in excitement.

The new employer health tax (EHT) comes as an unwelcome surprise to the business community. Set at 1.95% of payroll for all but the very smallest firms, the tax will generate almost $2 billion a year by 2019-20. Described as a replacement for Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums – which are being eliminated – the EHT spells higher labour costs for B.C. employers, even those who currently pay MSP premiums on behalf of their workers. Moreover, in 2019 many employers will find themselves paying both the new payroll tax and MSP premiums as the government effectively “double-dips” for almost a year.

The most glaring missing piece in Budget 2018 is the failure to acknowledge or tackle B.C.’s lagging investment performance.

We have long been worried about the long-term consequences of weak capital formation in the province. B.C. businesses aren’t investing enough in machinery, equipment, advanced process technologies, intellectual property products, and other assets that make our firms and workers more productive.

On a per employee basis, our businesses invest less than 60% as much as their American counterparts, on average. And like Canada, British Columbia is losing ground to the United States on competitiveness, capital formation and business attraction, owing in part to higher taxes, increased regulation and rising carbon and energy prices on our side of the border, at a time when the U.S. is moving in the opposite direction. Nothing in Budget 2018 suggests the government is keen to confront that problem.
