I don't have any good pictures off hand, but here is one from Christmas last year at my in-law's place that kind of shows their 6000sq foot log cabin with 20 ft ceilings in the living room...

This is just a silly argument. It is assessed value of the property. I could put up a wharehouse shoe box square house with a 20 ft ceiling complete with tin siding and a gravel roof and it should be taxed on the interior cubic air displacement?? Or 8ft ceilings, marble floors and gold plated plumbing fixtures.
Glace, you are way smarter than this straw man nonsense.

And Glace, if I were you I would be less concerned about ceiling height effects on property taxes for your 5 ft storage space and more concerned about the inlaws estate transfer plans and what will be subject to probate.
It's an unpleasant family chat but that cabin is easily plus million from the one photo. Capital gain on that is going to be brutal but with some proper planning can be mitigated.

Yup, they are screwed in that regards since they have no other assets to speak of. It's grandparents in-law, so they don't have many years left. It is their principal residence, but they built the place when they retired in 1980 for less than 35 thousand, but it's definitely worth many million today.

The part that's going to burn them is that they are American as are their children, and Uncle Sam makes the CRA look like a toothless beaver in comparison. When you die in the US it's often financial ruin for your offspring as Uncle Sam extracts 50% of everything you left (well not 50%, but I'm running with that since I don't have the number on hand right now), which means the kids have to sell everything to pay the death tax.

PS I'm pretty sure that houses with tall ceilings are assessed for more as are gold plated toilets and anything else that improves your house value (that's if BC assessment knows those specifics which they should if you have a newer house that had proper permitting done.

Mine went up 11% - notice, though, they are putting them up higher in area's that are under the "Speculation Tax" to maximize their robbery.

I have lived in my house for over 19 years, and now I have to fill out a stupid form every year to beg to be removed.

I'm tired of communists, ultra left wing and people whining because they "never had a chance in life" as an excuse to rob me of what I struggled to work for all my life.

I too never had a chance, but I worked damn hard to "Create one".

I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR NDP OR THOSE COMMUNIST GREENS AGAIN - I made that mistake the last time, well, NO MORE!!!! I'd rather vote for the Liberal racketeers.

By getting 10,0000 people to pay a an exorbitant ferry fee, plus overpriced hotel rooms - go to Victoria and parade on the lawn you pay for - the best way is to VOTE THE COMMIES OUT OF OFFICE in the next election.

I guess most people don't realize the BC assessments went way up so the Racketeers in Victoria can extort even more money for their selfish projects through the speculation tax - they care very little for the under privileged - they just use that as a tool to get votes and keep power.

People are SHEEP - they vote in criminals then *bleep* because they are being fleeced.

Even if you sell out and move, your downloading the problem on someone else because you can't simply pick up your house and move it, and that makes slaves to the system. A system that in itself is as corrupt as the worst gangsters and racketeers that existed in the 20's. And they are becoming more and more powerful liberal with their autocratic and obvious disregard for those they are suppose to be working FOR, not AGAINST!

I predict we will never see an honest form of government or an honest politician again in our lifetimes - the only thing that motivates them is MONEY - and with Billions in federal and provincial coffers ( they cry poverty when that is a blatant lie ), you can visualize how it would attract the lowest of the life forms in the human civilization. There are scum that would sell their own children for a buck, now they are running provinces, countries and states.

What can we do about as a so-called free and democratic people? Nothing - short of becoming anarchists, and all that would do is create a whole new set of problems.

What needs to be done is to identify the corruption and remove it - starting with Trudeau.

You need to understand that Politicians don't run for election because they actually CARE about you and me - they only care for themselves and how they can pad their own pockets and the pockets of their friends and families.

The Speculation Tax is only a small portion of a very big problem - and as a slave to the system, you really have no power other than to vote ( while you still can ) for the next narcissistic sociopath to rule over your life.

You can protest right on the lawn of the Legislature - mine you, if they know you are coming, the Hotels will double the rates and restaurants double the price of food.

Politicians are no longer there to serve and protect the people - they are attracted to and exist only for money and power and will stop at nothing to fill their pockets and the pockets of their supporters ( voters not included ).

Oh, cry me a river, you guys! It never ceases to amaze me how people moan and groan about the increase in their taxes, but conveniently forget to mention how much the value of their homes increased.

And how about that guy with the 6000sq.ft. log "cabin" [icon_lol2.gif] ?

I didn't buy my home to sell it - I bought it to live in and enjoy my life raise my children in a stable environment, and hopefully pay for the Nursing home I'm going to be incarcerated in when I'm at the end of my life - and if that doesn't exhaust it, leave what pittance is left for my kids to help them through their lives problems.

Why does everyone think we all buy homes to "Sell"!! - it's a long term investment, not only to provide security and sanctuary for life, it's also to help pay for one's retirement and potential care at the end of life.

Get real people - all the Government cares about is to line their own pockets under the pretense of being "Socialists" and "Benevolent Benefactors" - They can afford to because they steal from us and give it to the undeserving - 'including "THEMSELVES"!

Well thats some backward logic. So what if home values go up. It's not just YOUR house that goes up, its EVERY home. Sell that home to buy another and you don't gain anything. The government gains more on the sale and purchase of homes just for me to move cities; taxes based on the value so they are really happy if the value goes up becasue they can take more!

Unless I'm selling everything off and moving to Thailand I couldn't give 2 :cuss: what my assessed value is.
