N.D.P.'s Donaldson joins illegal blockade

NDP sides with protestors, ignores local elected officials

January 07, 2019

KITIMAT (January 7, 2019) – The NDP is once again siding with protestors as Forests Minister Doug Donaldson publicly declared his support for the Unist’ot’en blockade camp in northern British Columbia.

“Despite the courts ruling this blockade is illegal, Minister Donaldson visited the protest camp this weekend to show his support,” said Skeena MLA Ellis Ross. “This is a man elected to serve all British Columbians rather than his own personal interests. By going to the camp to stand with protestors, Donaldson is showing the thousands of hard-working families in northern B.C. and the First Nations who have signed agreements for economic development that he doesn’t care about them or their ability to provide for themselves.”

The nation’s elected leaders signed a benefits agreement with the province in 2014.

“The NDP needs to be supporting the province and the agreements in place with First Nations elected officials, not creating more confusion,” added Ross, who is the former Chief Councillor for the Haisla Nation in Kitimat. “First Nations communities across B.C. want economic development to address poverty and other issues, that’s why this project has the support of every elected band council along the route. What we keep seeing here are NDP ministers ignoring First Nations elected officials, because these communities don’t support the NDP activist agenda.”

The camp is located in the constituency of Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad, who is concerned that Donaldson’s ability to approve resource development permits in B.C. has been compromised by his continual habit of siding with protestors.

“As a member of government, Doug Donaldson promised to uphold the law in B.C., yet this weekend he chose to side with protestors who are breaking the law,” said Rustad. “Donaldson needs to figure out if he is a minister or an activist. British Columbians deserve better than this from the NDP.”

Disgraceful conduct for a Minister of the Crown. Let him cool his heels in jail for a while.

RCMP start to clear Indigenous pipeline protest camps in northern B.C.
Police have arrived at the Gitdumden checkpoint south of Houston

CHRIS GAREAUJan. 7, 2019 12:35 p.m.NEWS

Police have moved to enforce an interim injunction against the Unist’ot’en camp, Gitdumden checkpoint and any other blockades set up south of Houston.

As of press time Monday morning, members of the RCMP were waiting to meet with hereditary chiefs at the Gitdumden blockade on Morice River Road. Police were only allowing hereditary chiefs through a roadblock they set up.

Stikine MLA and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson was at the Gitdumden checkpoint Sunday, but could not be reached for comment by press time. His provincial NDP government support the project. Premier John Horgan was in Smithers in August to meet with hereditary chiefs. Nothing was agreed to.

Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen said on social media he spoke with hereditary chiefs and would visit the checkpoint to support a peaceful resolution. He has also come out in support of the project.

@WoodfordCHNL

We have made a request to get some clarification from Forests min @DonaldsonDoug on comments he is reported to have made at Northern BC pipeline protest camp and have been told the minister is "unavailable for comment." #bcpoli #bclng

Yes, he may want to adjust his comments. In the meantime he's unavailable.

To me, from the outside, much of this is about internal FN politics. The elected council made an agreement regarding a right of way, Some "hereditary" chiefs don't seem to like elected councils. We have seen this movie before.

It came up before Petronas pulled out of the LNG plant deal. The elected council made a decision, and a "hereditary" chief of a small group some kms upstream on the Skeena challenged the authority of the elected council to make such decisions, and if my memory serves me correctly, the SCOC denied that claim.

The shift in this one is that the hereditary chief is more or less saying that the elected council can not make decisions for his/her "clan", and the "clan" is claiming jurisdiction over some of the land. That is what I can glean from what I have read, and it may or may not bee 100% correct.

I seriously doubt the SCOC would uphold such a position.

I can speculate why "hereditary" chiefs are doing this stuff, but it would be pure speculation.

Donaldson stepping into this, in any way, shape or form strikes me as ill advised. It is, after all, a federal - FNs issue, and if you ain't part of that, MYOB. Especially as some do not even believe that even the SCOC has jurisdiction.
The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.

Looks to me like Donaldson is partying at the blockade by puffing on a fattie.

Personally this is a fine thing for an individual to do. As a ranking government official this is a terrible thing to do.

I get that personal feelings will often influence peoples choices, but government officials are elected and required to operate for the people of their province, not personal interests.

This is just as sleazy as back room contracts or other offences.

From Andrew Wilkinson:

@Wilkinson4BC

The BC Government has broken the rule of law to side with activists.
The people making the rules are blatantly breaking the rules.
BC is supposed to be a land of opportunity. What kind of government breaks the law to block jobs? #bcpoli

Also from Andrew Wilkinson:

It's time for Doug Donaldson to resign. It's time for John Horgan to stand up and make clear his Minister of Forests made a huge mistake.

This was not a smart move for a Minister of the Crown. Not way to spin this other than that is was an extremely poor decision to make and will very likely lead to his resignation/removal.

These NDP idiots can't help themselves. They are so used to being in Opposition and supporting the tiny minority of crazy economy-hating lunatics that old habits die hard. This is why they should never have allowed to govern in the first place. It's time this government was ended, and an actual elected government with a mandate from the people take its place.

The more I read about this, the more obvious it becomes that Donaldson should have stayed the heck out of this.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-wetsuweten-bc-lng-pipeline-explainer/

"The Wet’suwet’en’s elected band council has approved of the pipeline, but the checkpoints are backed by the hereditary leaders of the Wet’suwet’en’s five clans. The hereditary chiefs and their supporters are opposed to the pipeline"

SNIP

"The dispute also heightens the political differences within the Wet’suwet’en nation. In B.C., disagreements are common between elected leaders (who oversee on-reserve matters) and hereditary leaders (who claim jurisdiction over traditional territory)."

For Donaldson to be poking his nose into that mess is just plain dumb! It is a federal/constitutional vs a FN minority (apparently) within a FN issue.

IF the BC NDP brass asked Donaldson to poke his nose in, then they need their heads read!

This is what Donaldson did to support the illegal blockade:

Opposition MLAs began calling for Donaldson’s resignation after pictures of his visit appeared on social media Monday. Donaldson approached the protester checkpoint with a box of supplies and was allowed into the Gitmunden blockade camp.

Aiding and abetting the illegal blockade by delivering supplies was egregious. Donaldson should resign immediately.
