That they do, and that they are. But someone has to pick up the tab, and that's the sticking issue right now.

Couldn't agree more. I lived in the Vancouver area for 17 of the 25 years this event has been going on and it's not my cup of tea. I've never once been to or around one, but I can appreciate cultural events that appeal to people other than myself. I also have a bit of a bias because I know a number of the staging and equipment suppliers and like seeing that stuff out on rental.

It's not like this event doesn't pay a portion of it's own way. The permits required to put in lighting and staging - run electricity through a temporary system aren't cheap and they are definitely not optional. There's money changing hands, but parks won't give them the overall event permit. They don't want to pay policing costs, because they still view it as a protest movement. There's a bit of a false equivalency argument that comes to bare here too. Vancouver Sun run, symphony of fire - they have to pay their own costs for policing, but do they? Hidden deep within the COV financials you'll find some fairly hefty "in kind" contributions.

Hopefully, with this year behind them, everyone will sit at the table and leave their stigma's and agenda's at the door and work out a better arrangement for next years event. Regardless of what I think of the "protest" - I can appreciate 100,000 people enjoying the outdoor space and a cultural event in the City of Vancouver.

That's how communities are formed and the bond that ties them together.

Most people share your view, they have absolutely no issues with 4/20 as an event or festival, but they are getting a bit miffed at how the organizers are trying to get out of some of the responsibilities by keeping it a protest. Oh well, its over and done with, see what next year brings

Let me guess, .. You want to run a grow-op at home (rental?), and drive stoned. Is that what these protests have become about?

^^^ Driving stoned has been happening since before legalization, it’s now everywhere can’t help but smell it going down the highways of this Country.

Why are we calling this gathering a "protest"? What are they protesting? It seems to me more of a festival. But then, that would put the organizer on the hook for city services to keep it orderly, and clean up the mess afterwards. That's the bugger, I guess ...

Every vendor (divided equally) at this event should be sent a Bill for cleanup and repairs to the parks.
