Sold on your behalf: 164 B.C. schools and hospitals, agricultural and industrial lots worth $1 billion
In 2013, the province started selling 'surplus' public land to raise revenue. Postmedia has analyzed those sales.

LORI CULBERT Updated: June 14, 2019

Vancouver health centres, North Shore schools, and acres of agricultural land in Surrey are among the 164 pieces of “surplus” land that British Columbia has sold for more than $1 billion since 2013.

B.C.’s auditor general concluded this land sale program, the Release of Assets for Economic Generation, which was created by the former Liberal government, had “room for improvement” after she analyzed its first two years.

Postmedia has compiled information on all the deals from 2013 to today to look at what has been sold, who bought it, and whether taxpayers benefited.

The examination found several curious transactions, including properties that changed hands twice on the same day, benefiting the first buyers and not the government; large land parcels sold to developers who immediately had them subdivided for dramatic increases in their value; and land the government leased back after selling it because they still needed the properties.

The former B.C. Liberal government sold the land to raise revenue for provincial spending, but Auditor General Carol Bellringer, in a report a year ago, said there should have been more focus on achieving two other planned benefits of the program: the generation of jobs and saving the government money.

She analyzed the first two years of sales, from 2013 to 2015, and found changes were required after the Liberals sold off prime properties in Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain area for millions less than the appraised value. Bellringer made a series of recommendations for improvement, including preparing cost-benefit analyses before sales, adding controls to prevent bias and bid-rigging, and improving public accountability.

Andrew Wilkinson walks back ‘wacky’ renting comments

WATCH: BC Liberal leader apologizes for rental comment

BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson has apologized after calling renting a “wacky time of life,” “fun,” “enjoyable” and a “rite of passage” during prepared remarks in the legislature on Wednesday.

Wilkinson — the MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena, one of the wealthiest ridings in the province — joined the Jon McComb show on Friday morning.

Pressed to clarify his comments, he admitted some renters would be “miffed” by his remarks.

“Would I phrase it differently this time? Sure, why not? To correct the record, renting can be very difficult and very stressful, and some people are forced to do it their entire lives, even if they don’t want to.”

Wilkinson told McComb his comments failed to take into account seniors who may be facing renoviction from their rental properties, or people who are stuck renting, not being able to afford to buy.

I didn't find his comments "wacky" at all. Made a lot of sense.
All evidence points to the snollygoster scown Justin Trudeau being unfit to run this country. The LIEberal platform is all foofrah. Don't be fooled by the LIEberal decepticons. October 2019 can't come fast enough.

Every time I drive by the mostly vacant site of the demolished Little Mountain family housing project I am reminded of the wonderful community that used to be there and what all those families lost. A shameful reminder of the previous provincial government.

ICBC was formed because private wasn’t working well in BC. Ran well until the BCLiberals changed law so that they could get dividends from ICBC and so they ran it into the ground. Ignored recommndtns on how to address operational issues. All for privatization objective #bcpoli

It's like homecoming week at a BC NDP convention! She's an old NPA VSB fixture. I mean really, if we want to read any credibility whatsoever into these NDPer's posts, we'll need to see something that isn't out of the union's weekly newsletter.

What BC needs is a true and strong Conservative Party, both fiscally, and socially.
