HBC: A sinking ship

Post by mattinkelowna »

Word is out there that HBC may be closing 50% of its stores in the near future. They also laid off 2,000 employees in 2017.

Funny you mention this.
I was in HBC Penticton last week. Looking at coffee makers. I noted and even commented to my wife that there are more staff than customers in the store. Time was later in the afternoon.

I think they are headed toward the same port as Sears and Eaton's.

People are tired of paying crazy prices for goods, simply to cover ridiculous lease rates, when they can often find the same stuff for far less online.

I remember when Hudson Bay Company first got the Team Canada/Olympic contract. I thought alright long time Canadian company.... Oops not so fast, all the Team Canada product was made in China.
I was very disappointed, since even when Roots had the Team Canada contract everything was made here in Canada not off shore.

Now HBC is owned by US company.
