There should be NO raw logs leave this province.

NDP has gone back on their word.......AGAIN....
Aug 10, 2019

despite Premier John Horgan’s endless rant against exporting “raw logs” and jobs, despite mill shutdowns across the province due to jacked-up stumpage taxes on the coast and falling timber supply in the Interior, the export limit has been doubled in the Northwest Interior region around Kitimat, Terrace, Smithers and Hazelton.
Similar cabinet orders increase export limits for the vast North Coast, Cassiar and Haida Gwaii regions, apparently so Indigenous communities in the region can make money shipping the best “raw logs” overseas.

That comes after what he promised in January.

MLA Dan Davies – Weekly Column – Forests minister missing in action
At a time when he is most needed, the man in charge of the forest ministry appears to be missing in action – still!

Here is a hypothetical idea: what if the coastal timber supply area of BC has the ability to produce more logs/merchantable trees than what can be sawn/peeled to various products?
This is the case on the coast, not the interior on BC. The price of lumber that the majority of mills in the interior produces is not sufficient to warrant transporting suitable sized logs from the coast to the interior. It is not economical.
Yes some cedar is being moved from Chilliwack to Revelstoke but the end product price of cedar is a multiple of a pine 2 X 4.

Now, if NO logs are exported, regardless the fact more logs can be produced on a sustainable basis than what can be milled in coastal BC's sawmills, you have now shut down a healthy part of the harvesting segment of the forest industry.
So, more families are now on EI and the economy contracts. Dumb economics when several million cubic meters can be exported providing well paying jobs and added revenue for this tax and spend government.
NO, leaving them to grow bigger really does not make sense when mills have re-tooled for smaller diameter timber...

I don't really care one way or the other, but the key takeaway is the silence from the NDP crowd on this issue.

I believe his name was Jack Munro, he died 6 years ago.

I remember when him & Jack Webster would go at it.

A week ago, Black Press opinionator Tom Fletcher wanted us to believe the NDP Government is putting jobs in northwest BC at risk by expanding log exports. A heading on Fletcher’s online piece:

Skeena Sawmills comeback threatened by B.C. government

He explained:

They’ve endured shutdowns due to log shortages, high costs and union demands. And now they face a new threat – drastically increased log exports…

Log shortages? Indeed, numerous mills have been complaining they lack access to sufficient fibre after government allowed log exports to more than double during BC Liberal administrations.

Fletcher apparently forgot his previous reporting about Forests Minister Doug Donaldson announcing a new fee structure for logs aimed at reducing exports and delivering more raw material to BC sawmills.

I planned to post the above Monday morning but came across Tom Fletcher’s mea culpa dated today, August 18. I am left wondering what prompted: Log exports and my other errors so far in 2019

Fletcher admits that log exports are down and says he should have given Forests Minister Doug Donaldson the benefit of the doubt.

I suspect someone apprised Fletcher of the facts and his retraction aims at removing egg from his bearded face.
