RCMP Drug Helicopter Chase

RCMP were involved in a cross-border drug bust this summer that involved nearly 300 kilograms of meth, more than 100 guns and an aerial chase between a police aircraft and a helicopter.

Details of the bust are in paperwork filed at the Penticton Law Courts to support multiple search warrants for a property near Chilliwack where a helicopter at the centre of the chase is alleged to have landed.

Documents filed on behalf of the RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime Section in Osoyoos say the office was alerted in early June by U.S. Homeland Security about a planned cross-border drug deal involving nearly 200 kilograms of methamphetamine.

U.S. officials staked out a landing site in Washington state about 110 kilometres south of Princeton, where they believed the drugs would be transferred to Canadian buyers. Something spooked the pilot of the helicopter, and it fled north into Canadian airspace.

Two men who tried to leave the landing site in Washington were arrested by U.S. agents who seized 188 kilograms of methamphetamine.

In Canadian skies, an RCMP plane was patrolling near Princeton hoping to intercept the unmarked, black helicopter. Mounties spotted it in a shadowy landing site on a remote mountainside in Manning Park.

The helicopter lifted off, and the chase was on.

"The helicopter took deliberate evasive action, attempting to lose surveillance," the documents say. "The helicopter flew at very low altitudes, near the tops of trees and up narrow draws. It repeatedly changed direction, and made rapid ascents up towards the mountains.

"The helicopter varied its speed in an attempt to outrun the RCMP aircraft, and slowed down to have the RCMP aircraft overtake it."

The dogfight continued for 45 minutes, the documents say. On two occasions, the chopper pilot tried to lure the RCMP aircraft to a lower altitude and then rapidly ascended, in a vain effort to shake the pursuers.

The helicopter eventually landed at a rural property near Chilliwack. Court documents show searches of that property turned up 72 long guns, 35 handguns, ammunition, cellphone jammers, U.S. government helicopter decals, drones and currency from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

RCMP have not said if anyone has been charged and referred a request for comment to Homeland Security.

Homeland Security spokeswoman Tanya Roman said the investigation turned up an additional 84 kilograms of drugs, bringing the total amount of drugs seized to 272 kilograms.

Authorities believe the pilot was one of two men arrested at the Chilliwack-area property.

The Canadian Civil Aircraft Registry shows the helicopter's registration was cancelled last May.

I feel sorry for the guys that were caught on the US side, seeing they'll actually go to prison unlike the guys they caught on our side of the border which means they'll get the usual release "with promise to appear" :135:

Yes - PROMISE to Appear... and poof they are gone.. our justice system will say have a holiday in Canada for a couple years until we find court time.. !! THEY . probably steel a helicopter from out that area and head south to Mexico..,,, from reading the article... not a small operation at all... ( They may need a few caches of fuel on that trip )

GOOD for the border guys and the RCMP to make this bust.. I bet this is only ONE of many on the go...

As for the " 72 long guns, 35 handguns, ammunition" holly *bleep*... did they register those with the Trudeau/Liberal/Quebec
authorities... lol
The down east thinking of register and ban hand guns... should wake up and smell the coffee !!

IF they are American, they face being deported and face charges in a system that is much less lenient than ours. They also lose the chopper.

They should outfit the police chopper with a 50 calibre machine gun.

Good for about 500 rounds per minute which should help them out a bit. [icon_lol2.gif]

I don't imagine that little black flying gondola would survive too many hits from a gun like that.

Yeah, and then we would be hearing about the anti extensive use of force, or para-military faction.

I like your thinking though.

Canadian or not, the chase began in US airspace. Drugs were involved, you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be a US extradition order for chopper pilot, if that’s in fact who RCMP arrested in Chilliwack
I have a lot of opinions, just ask the wife. Some good, some bad, and others down right ugly!
But then, they are just MY opinions.

I am sure that crown council would be very happy to extradite anyone the USA asks for.

The news clip mentioned the RCMP were in an airplane, not one of their E350 helicopters.

an earlier picture shows a E 350 helicopter and the one above a MD 500 D I believe. Either would easily outclimb most planes.

Can you imagine a RCMP aircraft with a mounted automatic heavy or even mid caliber machine gun? Limp wristed media would have a field day.. With the pecking order found in situations like this, what senior officer would give the order to let fly with a whole lot of lead.
Overall, glad of the final outcome. No one hurt, especially the good guys and a decent sized arsenal off the streets.

The RCMP has EC130s, and AS350s otherwise knows as A-Stars or Squirrels depending where you are from.

I don't believe the MD500 pictured was the one in the chase, unless the news article was wrong saying the Canadian Civil Aircraft Registry shows the registrations as cancelled last May. The MD500 pictured has an N reg, so USA.

Pedantic aside, if it was in fact an MD500 the RCMP were chasing in their fixed wing, and the MD500 pilot was skilful as a pilot, the RCMP pilot did an incredible job of not losing track. The MD500 is the Porsche of the skies. 5 blades for the D & E models, small rotor disc so can fit in a very tight clearings, highly manoeuvrable and fast (for a helicopter). Not sure whether the Mountie was in a Pilatus (not exactly a slow flying mountain machine) or a Cessna, either way they did great to stay on the helicopter flying low level in mountains.

Why would the MD500 pilot fly back to base where all the loot is? Why not drop into a remote clearing, river bend etc, wait till the RCMP plane leaves to refuel, take off again and head for safety.
