of "General labour", or my favorite, "unskilled worker," chances are slim.
The governments have been lobbied for well over a decade to make drivers Red Seal Certified.
Stone-walled at every possible turn.
Dare to dream though.

Where is that dam like button
I agree.
I love it when told Drivers are a Dime a Dozen.
I feel like flipping them a quarter and telling them to buy 30
I don't think much if anything has changed since Humboldt, and I hope I'm not driving the bus the next time it happens.

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
I have driven trucks most of my life and mostly on the lower mainland but have seen many crashes and most of them happened just like this unfortunate one on Hwy. 97C. I have to wonder why the trucking industry, plus the training of truck drivers and all drivers included why they do not have to carry say about six traffic cones to have the drivers immediately walk back about a thousand feet or more to put these cones on the highway to give advance warning to oncoming vehicles of a danger ahead.
I watched the video of this fatal one on Hwy. 97 C and noticed it was a sunny day [ sun in the eyes of the driver? ] and it looked like the semi that was stopped for mechanical reasons was taking up most of the right lane and the other semi tried to avoid it in the last split second and did not make it. The video is on Kelowna Capital News.
Sometimes the semi going in that lane is prevented from changing lanes by vehicles attempting to pass and they would have to make a decision in this case of saving their life and taking the life of the passing vehicle driver and passengers by cutting them off and forcing them off the highway.
All drivers Must keep their eyes on the road a long way ahead of their location to be ready for these sudden changes in road conditions and dangers. Coming around a curve is very difficult to assume it is safe as you round it too. Please keep this in mind when driving.

I have learned that when driving anything that it is wise to always expect the unexpected. It worked for me all of my long life.
Please make it work for you too. Good luck.

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
Thanks for the updates on the cones and triangles but I do not know how far back most truck drivers put them as we know most vehicles are going about 120 K.M. an hour so one would need advanced warning a long, long way behind a broken down, or stopped vehicle especially before a curve in the road.
It is almost like standing in a bowling alley lane ahead if the pins and watching a bowling ball [the size of a semi ] coming at you.
For all people travelling our highways always remember this and get well away from your vehicle so that you do not become a statistic for not doing so.
I myself will go past an impending sad breakdown and go back, flashing my headlights to the oncoming traffic then set my vehicle up well behind the scene and try to slow drivers down.
Of course I try to get my vehicle well off of the highway so that I also do not become a statistic.

LADD 1 only works if they understand English, and also if not filled with verbaloldtrucker wrote: ↑Jun 17th, 2021, 1:35 pm I wonder if the driver had a VHF radio on LADD 1. Drivers with a VHF warn others that there is a problem ahead.

I usually have my radio on the company frequency to avoid the worst chatter and switch over when I see a friend or a potential hazard ahead.

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
I am pretty sure the triangle safety kit is mandatory as well as a fire extinguisher otherwise you wont pass inspection. I am also sure there is a regulation of where and how far apart the triangles must be set up. I am sure there is a research guru out there to look that up. Not me Im just and old fat lazy teamster
. I was told a story from a driver trainer that a refuse truck on the lower mainland many years ago where the driver had set out the triangles but yet some dumb a$$ 4 wheeler still rear ended said truck sued refuse company and won !! Go figure!!

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
As for the location of the triangles / flares or pilons, it varies.
On a straight flat section a couple hundred meters should be fine especially if you can leave your hazard lights on.
Around a corner or over a hill and you may need to borrow a couple sets and lay them back a km or further.

That's only 84 hours a week plus 10 hours a week doctoring your log book.
You may make $60,000 a year less the $45,000 in fines.
What more could you want.
Don't forget, Canadians are Lazy if they turn down jobs like that.

Many farm operations can have exemptions (or used to anyhow)
classified as "Farm Use Vehicle" that circumnavigates hours of
service regulations.
Best just be a family member as their is no Sh
ts to be given,
and its more life given than ever to be living ones own.
Pretty much like any trucking job really.
Lifestyle choice, not just a job.

When some companies only have one drivers license number on file and all their employees using it I assume they are all family members.

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
Rather than being ridiculously PC and woke, let's call it what it is.
Trucking has an apparent (I say apparent as I do not have stats) systemic safety issue that is more prevalent among certain groups.
CVCE and ICBC need to demographically profile the trucking industry issues (fraudulent licensing, poor training, accidents and incidents) and target enforcement accordingly.
ICBC does this for auto insurance. Boys/men pay than girls/women as those born with male genitalia, otherwise known as men are generally greater risk takers. In today's woke world, maybe getting a chopadicktomy lowers your ICBC premium
Would love to see the demographic stats for shoddy driving schools, fraudulent licensing, unsanitary cab conditions, spun out trucks from not chaining up, accidents, trailer fires (caused by using trailer service brakes to save tractor brakes (tractors often owner operator trailers someone elses) as they are descending in too high of gear).
Do your own basic demographic study (I have). When you see a semi wander from it's lane, descend a hill using brakes (shouldn't need to), smell of brakes but no brake lights (trailer brakes) yellow liquid filled milk jug get ejected, follow to close, rapidly come up behind another vehicle, look in the cab when you get a chance and see who is driving.
I recall Wally Oppal Ujjal Dosanjh calling out Indo-Canadians males as having a cultural problem when they had a rash of wife burnings and other violent happenings in the lower mainland for insolent behaviour. Sometimes certain demographic profiles need to be called out.
Catholic priests are another example of a demographic that has been called out for good reason.

Isn't a pump truck driver, being compared to a freight hauler, sort of apples to oranges comparison?oldtrucker wrote: ↑Jul 29th, 2021, 11:08 amLet the games begin....I have never seen this much work in my life.oldtrucker wrote: ↑Apr 13th, 2021, 7:39 am
Things may be turning around in that regard for us.
We....us old guys that can do this job in our sleep look to be the last other than new Canadians, there are no more young guys coming into the industry.
Finding qualified drivers that can operate a 18 speed , multi combo vehicles, etc is getting rare. I was talking with a pump truck driver yesterday as well as the owner of a civil contracting company last week. Rates for us could be going up to over $35- $40/hr this year (just in time cuz I'm too old now). They can't find guys with experience anymore. The job....she don't pay enough, and is too tough for most young people to consider getting into. Pump truck dude is making $46 /hr now....holy bleep! He said just 5 years ago he couldn't even get a interview with Nav Mak for lousy by the mile hiway work. I worked 1 day for them years ago.....they ran me waayyy over hours on that day....I parked the truck at the brake check, called my friend to come pick me up, then called the company to let them know where they can find their truck and where to stick it when they do find it.
Got 5 years + experience? Your worth $100k yr now at 50 hours /wk
