Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
Well there ya go. Just like throwing chump change.
$43 million dollars worth in the premise of better training.
https://www.trucknews.com/transportatio ... q_ce0GLDOE
The cynic in me thinks a huge chunk of these funds will be pocketed through
scams, TFW and citizenship fast tracking.
About the same as every other licensing mill already out there.
This will have a zero net effect for the small business operator that requires
to hire due to their current drivers aging out.
This is only good for a small handful of mega carriers.
so,
Nothing will change except for the tax burden on the populace.
Just my opinion piece as someone well worn in cruising around the block.
eta; I paid $500.00 to get my license stamped in the very early '80's
Also well versed in engines, transmissions, air systems, and trailers before ever going.
Seems that nowadays people without even the concept of how a toilet works
think they have the skills to properly run a rig.
Pffffft !

More good news.
https://toronto.citynews.ca/video/2023/ ... n-ontario/
Gravel voice dood echoes what I've stated for years. No shortage of drivers,
just a shortage of properly qualified drivers.
Many qualified leave the industry due to the dangers imposed on them by
the un qualified.
What a joke our government agencies have become in allowing such a travesty
to occur on their watch.
The largest employer in about every Nation is the Transportation Industry.
And it is failing large.

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
So true, I'm one that's been on and off highway, bush and oilfield you name it for well over twenty years. I sold my equipment a year ago and took a local job as a company driver, happiest I've been in years, local as in I don't need to leave town. I'll probably live longer now too. The company I'm working for is hiring and every driver is one that's been on the highway for many years and are just done with it.
103 hours of training is a joke, 500 isn't enough for a lot of what's driving these days. The days of driver's only needing ten hours to basically be shown a proper pretrip and a few other minor things because they grew up on a farm or around equipment are gone forever.

Man up, learn on the job, fake it till ya make it, and figure it out on your own was the attitude of the day.
Some may view my politically incorrect opinions as harsh and may be offended by them. Some think political correctness will be our undoing.

I hired a truck and instructor for 6 hours of training (after taking the air brake training classes).
I too walked away with a Class 1.
Never had an accident or ticket. I had a 5&4 trans.

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
^^^^^ difference being we grew up in Canadian weather, on Canadian roads(fields), running
all forms of equipment, loads, gas, diesel, propane, natural gas, hydraulics, air, and electrical.
Gear boxes, even 2 and 3 gearboxes working in unison, from a very young age.
Leaps and bounds ahead of the the current crop that have slim to no knowledge of any of
the above. Period !
Had a dude who I'd been hauling for, maybe close to 18 months (unlicensed)
pay $500.00 to a license mill in '82. 5 day course. done in three.
Away we go. just shy of 140,000 lbs. B.C. bound and all points north just shy of Alaska.
Never had a trainer ride along. ever.....
Now it requires a couple months of trainer ride along before dingle nuts gets turned loose.
matters not, everything taught gets tossed right out the window!
Such is the way of a braindead society!

More insanity on our highways. Again it's on that death highway #5 north of Kamloops.
This time a couple of truckers took matters into their own hands.

So tragic. Fault has not been determined, but reports say the bus was travelling on Hwy 5, across Hwy 1 when hit by the semi. There are stops signs at this intersection for those travelling on Hwy 5.the truth wrote: ↑Jun 15th, 2023, 1:47 pmanother one https://www.castanet.net/news/Canada/43 ... way-report

Re: Mandatory Training for Truckers
This one is interesting, that bridge's clearance is a full half meter higher than the tunnel and by looking at lane of travel in the picture, it would suggest that the truck did indeed come through the tunnel. So something must have happened in the short distance between the tunnel and bridge. Air suspension on the trailer perhaps? Unless they picked something up at the service area just south of the tunnel but the distance between that area and the bridge is a good kilometre, so for a truck to get up to that speed in that distance in that traffic to cause that damage would be difficult.the truth wrote: ↑Jul 19th, 2023, 1:49 pm https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/437625 ... -on-Hwy-99 honestly what is going on in the trucking industry

Or the truck came off 17a turned toward the Deas tunnel then used the oversized vehicle turnaround and headed back on 99 then hitting the overpass.Saviour wrote: ↑Jul 19th, 2023, 1:55 pmThis one is interesting, that bridge's clearance is a full half meter higher than the tunnel and by looking at lane of travel in the picture, it would suggest that the truck did indeed come through the tunnel.
