Re: Highway closures report and peoples need for assistance
Speaking of road closures how about closures due to eco terrorists and their planned illegal activities!

The group, called 'Save Old Growth' says the blockades will take place in a number of different spots across the Trans-Canada Highway including Highway 1 off-ramps in Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and in the Interior near Revelstoke.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

In this small town, there has been talk of another traffic slowing demonstration, using crosswalks and pedestrians to stop semi's which speed unregulated through town, passing on double yellows going too fast and using unmuffled Jake brakes unnecessarily on flat sections of road.
We're lost but we're making good time.

When are the DOT and Highways going to crack down on the crazyness happening on the Coq?
Absolute loony tunes going on, trucks going too fast, trying to skip chaining up, it is loco and we are footing the bill.
The RCMP is conspicuous in it's absence, RCMP officers do not like pulling over semi's for speeding because they take up so much space to pull over.
Methinks we should start banning negligent truck drivers from using the coq, it is the only way to actually get their attention.

Re: Highway closures report and peoples need for assistance
We got delayed once just up past the snowshed when there were multiple semis that spun out and jack knifed and had slid all over the place. One of the semi drivers got out, had only a light summer jacket, running shoes, and looked like he was 14 years old. He was asking other drivers how to put on chains. Really. One of the other drivers helped him put them on. A couple of hours later the traffic started to move and you should have seen the huge crowd at the washrooms at the old toll booth plaza.
And I've heard stories of drivers who had a brother or cousin who looks like them take the driving test.

Last night we had HW1 closed near Revelstoke due to lack of maintenance keeping the road safe. This morning the HWY remains closed for avalanche control.
We have to stop giving our highways maintenance to the lowest bidder. Ferries and highways should be managed and maintained by government work crews.

You and KnuckleHead are probably too young to remember when the government highways people were called the Department of Holidays.I Think wrote: ↑Jan 18th, 2022, 7:30 am Last night we had HW1 closed near Revelstoke due to lack of maintenance keeping the road safe. One particular time when these Holiday bothers and sisters decided to pull off a strike in the middle of winter, the most common comment was, highways conditions are no worse today than when they were on the job.
There's always room for improvement, but having government workers do the job?

Re: Highway closures report and peoples need for assistance
Yup, we should have government workers looking after the highways. Most government employees I've worked with in the past few decades have come to realize they have a good situation and take ownership of their work and outperform the contracted workers by a mile.
One other thing that I am suspicious of when contracts are awarded to foreign businesses, and this includes most of the Vancouver Olympic contracts that weren't tendered, the BC Ferries contracts that went to Poland, and the Port Mann toll bridge flow of money, and it's that when money flows outside of Canada, it no longer is subject to a forensic audit. If the money is spent inside Canada, it is traceable. So that money we spent on the Polish ferries could easily have had a chunk somehow find its way into a mystery bank account somewhere like the Bahamas in who knows name.
I'd rather have highways managers who have to face criticism from their neighbours than have some guy in charge whose only path up the corporate ladder is to skimp and keep the trucks in the yard because a fat bottom line satisfies his boss in Madrid.
Contractors are in the business of making money, not clearing highways.

Re: Highway closures report and peoples need for assistance
About 50 years ago, lived in Trinity Valley about midway between Lumby and Enderby, mid winter the snow was 6ft deep in the fields, When the snow plow came through, they plowed our 1/4 mile long driveway, no charge. Now they are refusing to plow a 60 meter public road between two paved roads that they do plow (from time to time).
At that time, if the truck or grader passed a car stuck after sliding off the road, they would put a strap on it and pull it out, if the driver signed a damage waiver.

And you expect our tax dollars be used to plow your 1/4 mile long driveway?I Think wrote: ↑Jan 19th, 2022, 8:39 amAbout 50 years ago, lived in Trinity Valley about midway between Lumby and Enderby, mid winter the snow was 6ft deep in the fields, When the snow plow came through, they plowed our 1/4 mile long driveway, no charge. You do not think they should plow a 60 meter long gazetted road between two roads that they plow currently?bb49 wrote: ↑Jan 19th, 2022, 3:32 pmAnd you expect our tax dollars be used to plow your 1/4 mile long driveway?I Think wrote: ↑Jan 19th, 2022, 8:39 am

Re: Highway closures report and peoples need for assistance
Not a closure but came back yesterday afternoon /evening on the Hope Princeton. Bare and dry and bare and wet/muddy in spots. The east bound lanes have some serious pot-holing happening so a heads up there, west bound had some as well but not to the same extent.
I suspect some big paving contracts this summer.
Anyone know if the Coq. is better?

Highways maintenance contractors are in the business of making money for their shareholders and/or owners. They try to do the absolute minimum that they can get away with. Trucks on the road burning fuel are also burning money and reducing profits. Privatization has been bad.

A friend took pictures of highway 8 today (Merritt to Spence's Bridge)...
