They have sure done a lot of work on tank hill! They are moving the highway to the north (closer to the river) with a level crossing...

^^^ That is incredible. Maybe the Coq crew and the Fraser Canyon crew have a bet we don't know about...

Who's going to be ready first?

Is it still essential traffic only on the highways?

I may have to dial back, "It's going to take a year." :200:

Pavement that gets laid in the cold and wet weather NEVER lasts. I believe that the short chunks of highway that are being replaced will be just gravel until the spring. And when they say that it will open to essential traffic only, they mean that only essential traffic will get on that road.

They've already said that the Coquihalla will be open to commercial traffic (I guess that's what essential means). I imagine not a lot of what they're doing right now is meant to be permanent at all, just to get it up and running until winter is over.

Got my daily eye-roll out of this:
Environment Canada is calling for up to 35 cm of snow on the Coquihalla between Merritt and Hope by Sunday morning.

“A frontal system is giving heavy snowfall over the Coquihalla Highway. The heaviest snowfall is expected from this morning through this evening,” said a statement by Environment Canada.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”
Way to keep up Environment Canada.

I am guessing paving will have to wait.

What did we expect? It is Winter. This is the highway that spawned it's own tv show, in Winter. And we only have four more months of...Winter.

Highway 3 is being plugged up by truckers not hanging their chains when they should.
Highway 80 where it crosses the sierras is often beset by wet icy conditions, that condition is the most treacherous for driving.
A few times on that highway west of Reno, have been stopped and checked for tires and chains, not a big deal except that some of the truckers from the south have no idea how to hang chains.
Chaining up is relatively simple, years ago driving logging trucks sometimes had to hang them two or three times on one trip.
It would be effective if lets say at Manning Park Lodge, or other wide places if the truckers were stopped and checked for chains, and if it was determined that chains must be used, have an RCMP officer checking that chains were installed before the trucks are allowed to proceed.
Much less expensive than having to clear the road every day or two.
We're lost but we're making good time.

That is a terrific idea. So why don't the powers to be do this?
I'm going back 20 years or more , but I was stopped heading back to the interior, passenger car, just before Hope during a winter storm. RCMP and whatever other vehicles had flashing lights at the time, were stopping EVERYONE to check the state of the tires and making the trucks chain up at that point.
As I drove up the Coq, everyone was still moving, no butt head trucker trying to install chains on a half jackknifed truck blocking 2 of 3 lanes just above the snow shed.

A couple of years ago as we were driving back to Kelowna from Abbotsford, we were nearly taken out by a trucker jackknifing across all three lanes of the highway shortly after the Box Canyon chainup and right before the snowshed. We had barely passed that moron when we saw another truck pulled over in the right lane to put chains on.

There’s a large chunk of today’s drivers that have never put chains on let alone seen them before.
Use to see them at box canyon or sowqua chain up trying to convince someone to put them on for them or show them how to do it.
An entrepreneur could setup a booth and make a small fortune on snow days

Just a heads up, any that are considering using the US link to get to Vancouver, be aware that any prezzies should be unwrapped and receipts be available.
We are planning to do the 97, 2 and 5 route to Vancouver later in the week and this was just brought to our attention...

Talked to Oroville CBP and they recommended they be unwrapped but if you have receipts and are using the US for transit and you get a willing agent, likely no problem.
Talking to a Peace arch Canadian officer about wrapped prezzies and coming back into Canada after the US transit, she said the officer could ask you to unwrap a few, all or none. Sounds like it depends on how they are feeling that day.
