The BC Government founded the Royal BC Museum in 1886 in response to a petition from prominent citizens who were concerned about the loss of British Columbian natural products and native artifacts. Judge Matthew Baillie Begbie, Charles Semlin, William Fraser Tolmie, and former Premier George A. Walkem were amongst those who wanted to stop European and American museums from appropriating BC artifacts.[11] Notably, the petitioners argued that the export of First Nations artifacts was particularly troubling, under the premise that “their loss [was] frequently irreparable.”[12]

On October 25, 1886, the 15-by-20-foot Provincial Museum of Natural History and Anthropology opened in the Birdcages (the former BC Legislative buildings).[13] The first curator was naturalist John Fannin, who donated his own large collection of preserved birds and animals to the museum.[14] After its inception, the Royal BC Museum continually expanded. In 1896, the museum was given space in the east wing of the new Legislative buildings. The museum's mandate was updated by the BC government in 1913, and the collection of natural history specimens and anthropological material became official parts of the museum's operations, as well as the dissemination of knowledge to the people of British Columbia.[15] In 1921, the basement of the east annex of the Legislature was excavated to provide the museum with additional room.

As part of the 1967 Canadian centenary celebrations, BC Premier W. A. C. Bennett committed to building a new home for the Royal BC Museum.[16] It opened on August 16, 1968, with a final construction budget of $9.5 million. The museum remains housed in this building.[17]

One of the most prized displays is the 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom Limousine once owned by John Lennon. It was purchased by Vancouver billionaire Jim Pattison and donated to the museum.[18]

Thankfully Horgan hasn't committed much in the way of provincial taxpayer funds for the native led 2030 Olympic bid , yet..............

If the new museum wasn't built we'd argue about where the money should be spent.
No idea why it has to take so long to construction - agree the cost overruns going to be probably double
I like museums but this isn't the time to build a new one.

Move it to the empty old Costco building in Kelowna.

There, I just saved the Gov't 700+ million dollars.

The Olympics is still a thing? Shoot, I thought Covid killed that. Which one are we bidding on, winter or summer?

Exactly what money? The money the province is going to borrow for this project and us taxpayers have to repay with interest or the money us taxpayers will pay through tax increases. The province has no money, as a matter of fact they/we are in debt up to our eyeballs. If "we" are going to spend borrowed money on something how about something that benefits us ALL like our health care or education systems rather than a white elephant located on a rock in the ocean that most of those who have paid for it have to pay the government yet again for a ferry ride to get to.

So far "we" aren't bidding on any Olympics.
The First Nations are attempting to bid on the 2030 winter Olympics, that is if we taxpayers will give them the funds to pay for it.

Thanks. Take your 10% cut too.

Asbestos, not seismically sound, threatened by floods. Hmmm, maybe we should also be tearing down the Legislature building too because it probably also checks all those boxes. I call bull - they just want to wipe the slate clean and appease a segment of the population who have been bitching about how the museum glorifies the "colonial" history of the province.

Meh. It probably costs as much to rebuild that museum as it cost the BC Liberals in legal fees to fight the BCTF for nearly 20 years. And the clincher? The BC Liberals lost in the supreme court time after time. What a waste of other people's money over and over and over again.

Oh yes, something to look forward to the reliable ndp cost over runs. Let’s see my final total cost will be around 1.5 billion +/- 250 million.

I said that 2 pages ago. Fast ferries rom the 90s all over again. Over runs of double the original budget and worth nothing after.
