BC has been a 2 party province, back when W.A.C Bennett began a coalition called Social Credit (Conservatives & Liberals). Vander-Zalm blew that up, so Gordon Wilson attempted build Liberals back up meanwhile Conservatives turned to the Reform Party.
Then Gordon Campbell came along brought Gordon Wilson liberals and Reform party together to become BC Liberals.

Right wing is BC Liberals/United Party
Left wing is the NDP

Ah yes Gordon Wilson, had forgotten about him. From Wikipedia :
  • Gordon Wilson (born 2 January 1949) is a former provincial politician in British Columbia, Canada. He served as leader of the Liberal Party of BC from 1987–1993, leader and founder of the Progressive Democratic Alliance from 1993–1999, before joining the NDP where he served in the provincial cabinet. He also ran as a candidate in the 2000 BC New Democratic Party leadership race. During the 2013 British Columbia provincial election, Wilson endorsed Liberal Premier Christy Clark for re-election over the NDP's Adrian Dix.

Wow ! forgot a lot of this -
• leader of the provincial Liberals
• formed the PDA (Progressive Democratic Alliance)
• then joined the NDP
• was an NDP cabinet minister
• ran for leader of NDP
• then endorsed Christy for re-election over the NDP's Adrian Dix.

All that, and he had time to have an extramarital affair with fellow Liberal MLA Judi Tyabji (can't blame him she was HOT)

So there new name is happening, next Falcon needs to seek out BC Conservative leader and mend any issues. Rebuild this coalition before the next election, if they ever want to become the government of BC.

Without a strong united right wing in British Columbia, the ndp will continue to win provincial elections.
Former bc politician seen this and created a coalition back in 50s.

btw I am just throwing out there my observations, from watching bc politics for 5+ decades. My posts are not about picking sides.

You are right. It had to happen in Alberta. Conservatives divided will be annihilated by the left. But they are still out of touch. They could have wooed Weaver if they actually tried. But conservatives are terrible at bargaining in good faith. Its all back rooms and shenanigans.

I'm surprised they took this long to rebrand. Clark and Campbell have been out of the public eye for how long? Doesn't matter what they do, I'll never vote Liberal provincially again (mind you, I can't stand Eby so my choices are getting pretty limited).

Return to “B.C.”
