invasive Goldfish Spreading

Reference the above, it is time for the Provincial government of BC to move on the issue. Making the sale of goldfish from pet stores illegal would be a good start. Irresponsible disposal of these fish by people who no longer want them, is a recipe for disaster in terms of our native fish species.

The question that begs an answer of course, is who are the morons who are doing this?

I would suggest once they hit the treatment plant their best before date is gone. I'll have to ask someone from the City on it.

Hope someone here buys a few and tries using them as bait. Will they be consumed is my thought if smaller. The 4 lbs, likely will not be bait fish.

It's illegal to use fin fish here as bait.

Best course of action is to require all tropicals to be sterilized before they're sold in BC.

I tend to agree with you.

Also flushing them down the toilet would not result in them showing up in Munson Pond, or the pond in Old Glenmore where they've been thriving for over thirty years that I know of.

If they could survive the water treatment plant, one would expect there to be quite a lot in Okanagan Lake.

Spoke to a friend who works for City. They would end up in compost piles at the dump. No way they could make it through the process as I figured.

Likely goofs who don't care and want Wally to live on. Toss them into the ponds or lake.

White Lake and Gardom Lake (in Shuswap) have been effected by these idiots who dumped their goldfish into them.

My boys mother,( worked at min of environment-fisheries 25+ years) mentioned the other issue they run into is some from back east that have moved out this way want to continue catching the course fish they use to in Ontario for example. They may lay 250,000 eggs, like the goldfish (carp) to a trouts 25,000 eggs. Not long before the trout are pretty scarese. They have had to kill off lakes to kill the introduced course fish so the natural trout can be introduced and hopefully thrive until they end up in a frying pan.

Depending on the size of the lake, killing/poisoning the lake could end up being the remedy.

Perhaps some media exposure to the idiocy of dumping goldfish and non native fish in BC's lakes. ???

I can't help but wonder how many goldfish have been dumped into Okanagan Lake, given its size and length of shoreline?

Will be paying attention to the kokanee caught - hate to think goldfish would be giving them a run for their money. Here's what one lake had to contend with:
