Phone Ban in Schools
This makes so much sense.
Positive results and it only took five months. Now if only all school boards can bring this in.

B.C. school teens showed improved grades and social skills after a ban on phones.

Re: Phone Ban in Schools
This is an example of a no brainer, that the education system should have implemented from day one.
It's not as though we need a study to prove that the phones are a distraction, not to mention an open doorway to cheating.
Were it up to me I'd ban them during work hours at the job site also.
I'll wager the cost of lost productivity due to cell phones is staggering.

Re: Phone Ban in Schools
I just got a note from my son's school about this.
The school's policy until now has been that phones are to be put away "from bell to bell". Students are not following this though (surprise surprise) so they're taking the step of having teachers collect phones at the start of the day, securing them, and giving them back at the end of the day.
I have no problem with this at all. It's an elementary school, so even among the older kids, not everyone has a phone (my Grade 6 son doesn't) but obviously it's been an issue for some students.

Finally. However when are the "Karen" mothers going to start making a fuss about this excellent, about time event?

Cellphone addiction has to take root early in one’s life.

Hmmm, when I was in high school we weren’t even allowed to use calculators since that was considered cheating.

Back in my day our high school mathematics teacher allowed calculators in class, with 1 huge exception… No calculators allowed on tests.Hurtlander wrote: ↑May 10th, 2023, 7:31 pm Hmmm, when I was in high school we weren’t even allowed to use calculators since that was considered cheating.
Algebra full explanation, he wasn’t necessarily looking for a correct answer… was looking for proper train of thought.
Looking back probably the best teacher I ever had.
Added later: found out later he had a Masters in Mathematics.

Age is showing. I was using slide rule in University. Calculators were brand new and could only add, sub, div, and must. Slide rules had the cos, sin, tan. Now of course that's all available on your phone. So are the phones banned because they are distracting, or because Siri can give you the instant answer?GordonH wrote: ↑May 10th, 2023, 7:47 pmBack in my day our high school mathematics teacher allowed calculators in class, with 1 huge exception… No calculators allowed on tests.Hurtlander wrote: ↑May 10th, 2023, 7:31 pm Hmmm, when I was in high school we weren’t even allowed to use calculators since that was considered cheating.

UBC in 1972. Basic calculator was over $100. Top of the line slide rule was $35. Starving student.GordonH wrote: ↑May 10th, 2023, 8:24 pmHewlett-Packard 35 came out in 1972.Kodidad wrote: ↑May 10th, 2023, 7:57 pm

The first calculators I recall seeing around that era were Texas Instrument with red numbers on the screen.GordonH wrote: ↑May 10th, 2023, 8:24 pmHewlett-Packard 35 came out in 1972.Kodidad wrote: ↑May 10th, 2023, 7:57 pm
