BC Hydro needs more power
https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/45779 ... ro#457790
It seems that the unfettered residential, commercial, and industrial growth in BC has caused BC Hydro to change its energy needs forecasts.
“ BC Hydro has changed its load forecast in anticipation of new industrial customers, including new LNG plants and new mines, and population growth.
“We said the demand for electricity is higher than we thought it was going to be when we developed that first plan," Daschuk explained. “And the supply of electricity – especially from the biomass – was less than we thought it was going to be.”
“This is what is going to be probably the first of many calls,” Al Leonard, BC Hydro’s executive vice-president for Capital Infrastructure, said Thursday at a Greater Vancouver Board of Trade energy forum.
“Whereas much of the independent power projects built under previous power calls were largely run-of-river, Leonard said under the next power call, the new power projects that get approved will “probably a mix of some wind and solar.”
However, BC Hydro won't pre-judge what independent power producers put forward.
“We are open to any technology," said Maureen Daschuk, executive vice-president of Integrated Planning for BC Hydro. "So we’re not saying this is a call for wind or this is a call for solar."
It is good to see that this call for proposals have a wind/solar bias that allows existing hydro sites and Site C when complete to compliment intermittent generation.

We can’t fight homelessness, hunger, or poverty, but we can fight climate change. The juxtaposition of the now and the future, food for thought.

I was patiently waiting to see when this
was going to hit the fan.
Growing drain on power needs:
1) more EV’s
2) more Heat pumps
3) growing population
Time to seriously look at nuclear power generation.

Hopefully one of the proposal would include a Small Modular Reactor. Perhaps we could see a proposal from CanadIan Nuclear Laboratories. others. Their research modules would be attractive for remote off-grid applications in northern BC communities or industrial sites, such as mines. These module produce relatively cheap consistent, reliable and low carbon, clean electrical energy and heat which could be used for community or industrial needs.

Unfortunately not all ideas to use electricity to reduce the province’s environmental footprint are sound.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british ... 1.7030632
The province will spend about $16.5M to put 6 hydrogen powered heavy duty transport vehicles on the road. While hydrogen burns clean and produces only water and heat as waste products it takes a disportioncate amount of electricity to produce. “ Industry watchers, like Eric Doherty, a transportation and energy consultant with Ecopath Planning in Victoria, says hydrogen-powered transportation solutions could end up not being as efficient or cost-effective as other alternative energies.”

Wind and solar use up far too much land for the amount generated.

Yup, huge demands brought on by population growth and technological advances, many requiring huge outlays in electrical production.
Oh, and the internet. A big, big user.

AND , compared to their "clean" energy output vs their carbon footprint they are more harmful to the environment the the crash of the Exxon Valdez ..

Nuclear Has The Highest Capacity Factor

there is no other way but pursuing nuclear power not only regular nuclear power plants but also SMRs

Re:https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/457790 ... y-BC-Hydro
While it plans to achieve some savings through energy conservation, BC Hydro plans to issue a new power call in the spring of next year for 3,000 gigawatt hours of new power.
Re: Site C https://www.bchydro.com/energy-in-bc/pr ... ite_c.html
When completed in 2025, the Site C Dam will become the 4th largest producer of hydroelectricity in British Columbia with an expected capacity of 1,100[2] MW and an expected annual output of 4,600 GWh of electricity
So we should be building another Site of Hydroelectric Power like Yesterday.... ho hum
Guess the top brass got their usages messed up or ? Why plan just wait and see attitude..!!!
No Problem YVR is going to help with new heat Pumps....lol and use more electricity..

An as tax payers we sit and say ho hum.. !!

Dumbest idea yet.erinmore3775 wrote: ↑Nov 16th, 2023, 6:31 pm It is good to see that this call for proposals have a wind/solar bias that allows existing hydro sites and Site C when complete to compliment intermittent generation.
Everywhere that has opted for wind and solar is grossly underpowered and grossly expensive.
This is Canada, where we're in winter 6+ months of the year. Kinda like where this idea was pulled from - where the sun don't shine.

Yet, some jurisdictions in BC mandate electric heating for new builds over gas. Go figure!
Posters who once get on my ignore list do not get off it easily. They would have to demonstrably improve their behavior.

Because it gives those bureaucrats a warm, fuzzy feeling, knowing their electric heat is turned up and their well paid, cushy government jobs allow for a smug look.BC Landlord wrote: ↑Nov 16th, 2023, 9:31 pm Yet, some jurisdictions in BC mandate electric heating for new builds over gas. Go figure!

Lets not forget the mandated EV hook ups in all new construction.

Re: BC Hydro needs more power
Absolutely crazy that this is just being released as news.
Should be seen more like incompetence at the highest levels.
For how many years has the even smallest brain been touting the fact of a limited power grid?
The push of heat pumps is nuts....
FYI, I had a heat pump at my last house, super high end stuff. Never ran the bloody machine as a heat source cause I couldn't afford the power consumption. Period. Always ran furnace as it was cheaper.

Re: BC Hydro needs more power
Solar panels on roofs of single detached homes in wealthy neighbourhoods is becoming a bit more common. At least above us anyway. last year I saw a few on wineries covered with 6" of snow.
Not sure of the solar panel benifit in a 150 unit high rise. Plenty of HVAC's and other detritus on the roofs of these buildings.
What concerns me the most is what happened with those run of river projects 30 years ago where those companies managed to sign contracts for BC Hydro to purchase that power long term for more than what our current dams cost is. So, in effect, they were subsidized by you and me to the benefit of various companies CEO's. This asinine push for weather dependant windy-solar I hope will not go down the same path. But likely will...

SMR's are the way to go in my opinion. They have worked great on American nuclear powered submarines and aircraft carriers for 50 years.
