Not a police state? Now I'm afraid! This is TOO much.

We get all these new laws for the benefit of our safety. They put fear into society, and then turn around and give us laws to make us secure. And in the mean time we are loosing our freedoms, and someday will have to fear the ones who are telling us now, they are making things safe for us.

I don't know where you get the idea that laws put fear into society. I'm not fearful. Perhaps you are, I don't know. If you are, perhaps you ought to reevaluate your perception of law and society.

I said they put fear into people, and then make laws to make people feel safe.

Okay, I'll bite, how do they "put fear into people"?

I still don't get it. I'm not fearful. Perhaps you could contact 'they' and tell 'them' 'they' are doing a poor job.

Maybe not "clearly" a police state now, but certainly coming up to the opening. Gramma put very good details on how we're being policed and watched at our OWN WILL, by accepting all the devices and chips of control into our daily lives. Not much we can do, if we want to interact with society. Like if you want to operate money, you need a bank account, and then you need a card, that now comes with a chip, etc, etc...

Big brother has been watching, is watching, and will keep watching. Very interesting happenings to unveil next month during the Olympics, lets sit and watch. :sleepdeprived:

What an interesting turn this thread has taken. One thing I have noticed in recent decades is how so many "citizens" in our society seemingly spend copious amounts of their time dreaming up new things they want governments to control, or old things they want governments to control better. The socialist hordes bent on advancing creeping socialism will never sleep it seems, but I never could quite figure out their real motives ;-)

Governments of course respond because it means votes, and votes mean power over us.

It's getting to the point where so many folk are not only constantly looking over their shoulder for some "official presence" who may catch us doing something trivial but "wrong" and decide to take us to task for it, ....but also becoming wary of threats to our privacy and enjoyment of life by family, friends, acquaintances, and neighbours - indeed every other human being we encounter whether we know them or not.

There was a time not that long ago when minding one's own business and keeping one's noses out of the personal affairs of others was a reasonable expectation in our society. Not so any more it seems to me. Government and officialdom must really love it when they can pit people against people, and the people themselves are so willing to oblige ;-)

This part of your post is great. I was just thinking about it myself, people are taking the job of doing the "policing" by themselves, unknowingly working for the state, for being afraid or just for thinking they're doing the "right thing". :ohmygod:

High school uses notebook webcams to spy on students
By Matthew DeCarlo, TechSpot.com
Published: February 19, 2010, 1:31 PM EST
The parents of a Lower Merion high school student have filed suit against the district for using school-issued laptops to spy on kids. The school rigged notebooks with software that lets officials remotely view and capture images with the built-in camera -- a mechanism that was supposedly greatly misused. The plaintiff's child claims to have been disciplined in school for "improper behavior" at home, and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence.

In a statement yesterday, Superintendant Dr. Christopher McGinley confirmed that the laptops indeed have a "security feature" to track missing systems. The "feature" can take a "still image of the operator and the operator's screen," but McGinley said it has been deactivated, and will not be reactivated without express written notification. He also insisted that the feature has only been used to locate lost, stolen or missing laptops.

Students involved in the suit have contacted Gizmodo with details about the situation. It's said that the green lights next to the kids' laptops often turns on, suggesting it's in use, but the district claims it's just a glitch. One student questioned a school IT guy about the light, who said it was occurring because "people logged out when an application using the camera was on." The employee also admitted that the school could in fact look through the webcam, but it would violate law.

Here's another longer story about the same thing http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/ ... geNumber=1
