Reimbursing Doctors for Volunteer Work
Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc said he's still evaluating a request by some doctors that they be reimbursed $704 per day by the province for volunteer work in Haiti.
Some of the 20 orthopedic specialists interested in the mission have landed in the Caribbean country, where as many as 200,000 people were killed two weeks ago in a massive earthquake.
If you are getting paid....THEN IT ISN"T VOLUNTEER WORK!!!!!!!! If you want to get paid then stay home. Who would be footin' the bill for this??????? Quebec taxpayers, Canadian taxpayers. It it just bull$hit and greed.

I hear what your saying Ferrie but I bet they do care. How long can we excpect these medical professionals to stay over there with no monetary compensation? 2 weeks , two years?
I think it might be a very good way for the Canadian government to invest some of the tax dollars flowing to Haiti right now.

maybe, but if you volunteer then you stay as long as you can handle it right? if i were there i would stay until i just couldn't take it anymore or felt i had to leave. then i would go home. i sure wouldn't expect bribe money to keep me there helping people. just rubs me the wrong way.

If you dont want to "volunteer", stay home (or go home if you are there)-don't ask for compensation-this makes me sick.

Something to be said for still having bills to pay

Thens stay home and work to pay them.....dont ask for $700/day-that is outrageous. A stipend is one thing, it pays for day to day expenses while there, but seriously-this is ridiculous.

I we are worried about Doctors and the bills they have to pay (whats the monthly payment on a Jag these days anyway????) then they should get them all together and rotate through, 3 wekks in 3weeks out.
Re: Reimbursing Doctors for Volunteer Work
what a surprise - the doctors are from Quebec. Do they ever stop whining? I am surprised they haven't gotten all of the doctors volunteering in Haiti to unionize by now and go on strike. I am so fed up with this BS from Quebec - that whole province needs a giant wake up call.

I haven't talked to a doctor recently but I understand equipment in their offices is really expensive.

And don’t forget that Quebec is perpetually a “have-not” Province, meaning they receive additional tax transfer subsidies from the “have” Provinces like Alberta and up until very recently, B.C. This of course means that we taxpayers across Canada basically subsidize some of the financial stupidity in Quebec.
It would be interesting if Ottawa told Quebec they would deduct Federal equalization transfer payments in the event that Quebec wanted to turn volunteers into paid employees if Quebec would still be keenly considering this policy.
