Agreed. The problems with most of society's 'solutions' is that they're not pragmatic. "Give us a response and we'll stick to it." It should be seen as a beginning step, not the holistic answer. Suggestions like your last, Hutton, are what's needed to be aired. Everything must evolve, and only human ingenuity can provide that.

I would suggest that because there is still a stigma in our society when it comes to mental health issues, there are drug users who try to "fix" themselves & get addicted.
I think it's awfully simplistic to say all of those who are addicted to drugs have made their bed & should sleep in it.
Everyone has a choice, but when you are suffering from mental illness, it may not feel like you actually have one.
I realize not all drug users have mental health issues. Some of them started using of their own volition.
I am bringing this up after working as a counsellor in an advocacy office in downtown Vancouver, where I saw a lot of people who were trying to get their life together after being addicted to drugs.
Many of them were physically or mentally disabled.
I fully support InSite, because we are saving lives. Everyone deserves a chance, even if the system isn't perfect.

My opinion?
I think a person would have to know a whole lot more about the situation than I do to make to make a proper decision. I would be just as happy to shoot them, or give them enough all at once so they OD. Bullets are probably cheaper but ODing is less messy. It is illegal in this country to commit suicide (really), but that is what these people are doing, the first time they mess with those drugs.

If they are determined to mess with drugs, there are 2 choices. Assisted suicide, or lock them up for breaking the law.

Despite my intolerant opinion, I mostly agree.

I have my beliefs, as well, and know what works for me, but I think it is safe all the way around to have this open. I know people who were afraid of the stigma, and did medicate themself...it is so true. People are very harsh when it comes to mental illness.

I think it would be safe to say that all drug use is a form of self-medicating, regardless if the user has a condition or not.

Good point...I was just thinking....substance abuse has a high corralation with physical/mental abuse and feelings of self worth. If the person feels they will be judged even more, they will not want to subject themself to anymore...thus more drugs or alcohol. Medical people do tend to judge harshly, as well....not all, but some.

People with your mentality are more of a danger to society than than the addict.

I guess so. In Canada, you are deemed to be "dangerous" if you are honest. I'm going to break into your house and steal from you to feed my "honesty" habit

hutton,

Just to clarify, you're suggesting that in order to save money we should deny intravenous drug users treatment for AIDs?

NO, that is not what i am getting at, I just think that WE (taxpayers) shouldn't be footin' the bill for for these people to have a comfy safe place to shoot their drugs or be treating them for the AIDS they have contracted as a result of their drug use. But it is not to SAVE money, still spend it but spend it on more worth while social programs. ](*,)
