Merry wrote:I'll respond to your comments HG because, as you point out, it's a very complicated issue.

It IS a problem when most of our technological components are made in a communist country like China; and the Public needs to be made more aware of the fact that it's happening.

When one considers National Security, I tend to agree with those who say offshoring such technology is foolish. But when one considers the economic side of the argument, it's easy to see why companies are utilizing the lower wages and environmental standards such offshore manufacturing provides. I don't agree with it, but I do understand it.

However, once people know how much of our technology is produced in places like China, it tends to give lie to the fearmongering around the issue of whether or not it's safe to buy and use Hwuawei technology. Fearmongering that is often more about giving Western companies such as Apple a bit of an economic "edge" over a successful rival. It shows most of the fear mongers as the true hypocrites that they are. BUT that's not true of ALL those who are raising concerns.

I do believe that there is a genuine argument for not off shoring the manufacture of our technological equipment, particularly to countries such as China who do not share our Western values, and could potentially pose a threat to us one day. Trade with such countries is fine, and ought to be encouraged if it leads to a greater understanding of each others cultures. But allowing trade that involves the potential to compromise our national security is just plain foolish.

As for allowing the States to use Canada as a pawn in it's ongoing trade war with China, well that was just plain foolish as well. Because now we're in a "no win" position that we can't get out of. The world didn't come to an end when Chretien stood up to the States, and it wouldn't have come to an end if the Libs had quietly warned Meng Wanzhou to stay away. Trump wouldn't have liked it but, provided the Libs consistently denied having done it, there's very little Trump could have done about it.

Came across this view from a University of Calgary prof that you might like:https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-canada-isnt-to-blame-for-the-meng-wanzhou-mess-china-is/

"Philip Calvert is a senior fellow at the China Institute at the University of Alberta and a senior research fellow at the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives at the University of Victoria. He served for 10 years as a diplomat in China and from 2012 to 2016 as Canada’s ambassador to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos."

The dispute between Canada and China over the Dec. 1 arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, and China’s retaliatory detentions of two Canadians living in China, is entering its sixth week. While many have expressed dismay over China’s actions, some have argued that Canada could have avoided this whole mess in the first place.

These critics argue that since officials in the Canadian government were aware of Ms. Meng’s impending arrest, they should have found a means to avoid this situation and its potentially explosive impact on relations with China. This could have been by demonstrating “creative incompetence” by missing Ms. Meng in Vancouver, or by finding a way to warn her off. Failure to arrest Ms. Meng, they say, would have avoided this disruption in Canada-China relations.

This kind of frustration is understandable. But the suggestion that Canada should have circumvented the rules in this case is, simply, nonsense."

SNIP

"If anyone’s actions prior to Ms. Meng’s arrest should be questioned, it is those of Chinese, not Canadian, officials. It is in fact puzzling that they did not take action to warn her. Chinese diplomats are well-trained and sophisticated; they must have known of Canada’s extradition agreement with the United States, and of the arrest warrant issued for Ms. Meng on Aug. 22 by a New York court. Someone in the Chinese system clearly messed up. So it is puzzling to see these Canadian commentators appearing to line up with the Chinese government in laying the blame on Canada."

SNIP

"Canada supports the rule of law as a fundamental principle of its participation in international affairs and multilateral institutions. If we support the rule of law, we can’t pick and choose when it applies. This is the reason for our action on the Meng case, and it’s also our only way of navigating the competing demands of the United States and China in this challenging case. It is a value increasingly under threat in the world, but one that Canada continues to promote internationally, and that underpins our engagement with China and all other partners. China’s bullying response to a legitimate legal process should not distract us from this reality."

Blaming the federal government for not letting Ms. Meng get away will not restore Canada-China relations, nor will it hasten the release of the innocent Canadians caught in the middle of this conflict. In fact, it’s an argument that rests on a Faustian bargain – and one Canadians should not even consider making."

So then I wonder why now? Why is there a fuss over cell security and Huawei/China? At first I thought it might be purely $$$ in that Huawei has overtaken a number of US manufacturers/sellers (like Apple) in world market share. That turns out to be more leaping to a conclusion than a sound idea, although it may play a some role.

Then I did some reading as to why Australia banned them from the new 5G network. IF I read this article correctly, 5G is much more difficult to secure than the old netwrok. Now I am a tech dummy, but if that is the case... why would we want it? https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-01-08/huawei-small-cell-boxes-explainer/10695738

Mr. George calls 'em like he sees 'em. I can't disagree with this conclusions.

Trudeau blasted as 'a liar'

Audience members react as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks during town hall Q&A at Thompson Rivers University.

Indigenous people voiced their anger and frustration with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday at a chaotic town hall in Kamloops, loudly interrupting him to condemn the arrests of protesters at a pipeline blockade.

While Trudeau was answering a question on accountability for the oil and gas industry, a man who identified himself as Will George stood up and began to yell that the prime minister had lied about wanting reconciliation with First Nations.

"You're getting people arrested," George said. "You're a liar and a weak leader. What do you tell your children?"

Mmmmm. I have searched through the Kamloops Daily News, Global News, etc. without being able to determine how many paid $300.00 for lunch with JT (gag), but only on numbers waiting outside to protest his policies (or lack of).

You'd think if it was a sold-out rubber chicken lunch it would have been trumpeted about, but, just silence. Oh well, maybe his entourage got a sit down meal for free.

As I understand it, he did a Liberal fund raiser and a townhall meeting.

Fundraiser;

Town hall meeting:

One of the things I admire about JT is his willingness to go out in Public, do these sometimes hostile town hall meetings and answer to the people. I'm pretty sure I didn't see the last government do any of these things. They were at their best in the backrooms and alleyways plotting and scheming to screw over the Canadian people.

Yes, already perused KDN and as I already said, they report how many protestors were around to greet him but

NO report of how many peeps paid $300 for lunch. Perhaps lunch was a flop?

Norma, having a sensitive stomach I will let you listen to egghead for me, ok?

People didn't want to have lunch with an open-mouthed chewer.

It does seem unusually difficult to ferret out info on this possible flop of paid lunch, doesn't it?

Maybe KDN will have something later today in their comments section which have a 24 hour delay before postings show up.

KDN is having a "who would you vote for?" online poll. As of last night 3x more votes for Cons than Libs, at least in Kamloops. Here it is likely much higher.

Bernier needs to shout louder I think

TransCanada name change 'de-emphasizes' Canada for leery investors: analyst

Company changes name to TC Energy, will still trade as TRP on Toronto and New York stock exchanges
Dan Healing · The Canadian Press · Posted: Jan 09, 2019 6:23 AM MT | Last Updated: January 9

A planned move by TransCanada Corp. to change its name to TC Energy will help it attract investors who are "leery" of putting money in anything Canadian given the country's recent difficulty in building energy projects, a U.S.-based financial analyst said Wednesday.

{Snip}

"Some investors have grown leery of investing in Canada. I think this is a way to de-emphasize Canada, quite frankly," said Jennifer Rowland, a St. Louis-based analyst for Edward Jones, noting delays in building new oil pipelines led to Alberta imposing crude production constraints on its producers.

"Removing Canada from its name is a way to remind investors it's not just a Canadian company, with some of the challenges we're seeing in Canada."

We already know the answer to this from the Liberal peanut-chuckers - it's all Harper's fault!
