Astronauts are seen as having a very prestigious reputation, though for most It’s never been a very high paying job despite the risks because much of it is just the ability to follow training. In the movie “the right stuff”, astronauts were a replacement for chimpanzees. Chimps were fine until we began doing experiments and playing guitar in space. Doing the things that can’t be automated. It’s not very often you hear about the engineers/managers who enable the technology. I can understand why Payette was chosen, but first appearances are very superficial. The interview couldn’t have gone much further than “wow, you’re an astronaut?”

Very true, Justine likely crossed paths with her somewhere or saw her photo when he took his kids to the space center or some place and had a brainfart.

It is obvious from what was said on the news today he did not do any follow-up on her. According to the news there was actually assault charges laid against her, and they were withdrawn or stayed. IF you see that on anyone's past, you would think common sense would be, next!

He's using the process as the excuse instead of being accountable for his lack of experience and failure again..

He met her at a party. Knowing Justin Trudeau, this may have been payment for keeping quiet about what happened between the two of them that evening.

Payette was given severance of roughly $200,000 when she resigned from the Montreal Science Centre in 2016 following complaints about her treatment of employees, say multiple sources.

In 2017, she left the Canadian Olympic Committee after two internal investigations into her treatment of staff, including verbal harassment, sources said.

CBC had reported on behaviour dating all the way back to her years at the Canadian Space Agency in the 1990s and early 2000s. Some who worked with her there say they have no wish to interact with her again until she apologizes for the negative and demeaning way she treated them.

And of course there's this,
It's also the government's desire to consider selecting an Indigenous or diverse candidate, LeBlanc said, saying that's been a priority for all appointments and senior positions since forming government in 2015.

Nothing bit pathetic virtue signaling.

That one is allowed( Payette) because she is under the bus ( among others) with a golden handshake while trudeau and the liberals continue with their never ending string of failures, faux pas, distractions and shovelling money out the door without a thought of the taxpayers they represent .SUNNY WAYS INDEED.

Yes, virtue-signaling indeed. All about keeping that base who value empty vacuousness over actual competency. It's funny though watching the Liberals kow-tow to the gullible idiots out there and apply this doctrine of obeisance over actually valuing competency. We saw this with the appointment of Payette by Justin, and we see this in their stupid 50-50 gender policy in the Liberal cabinet. Why can't there by 60-40 women? It's totally misogynist, and is limiting our country by not allowing more competent women in cabinet. And so we end up with resignation after resignation (mostly incompetent men) when a competent woman could have been doing the job. All to virtue-signal about "diversity". It's just garbage.

Trudeau only wants obedient, barefoot-and-pregnant women in his cabinet that bow to his every whim. Strong women like JWR, Jane Philpott, and Celina Caesar-Chavannes get spat on and kicked out by the enraged misogynist Justin Trudeau.

I still believe Payette only got the GG job because Trudeau did something inappropriate when he met her, half-*bleep*, at a party. And now she's gone too.

Anyone see a pattern here?

Lloyd Wilks: Julie Payette quitting is a constitutional car crash

The irreparable damage to the reputation of the office of the Governor General of Canada instigated by the resignation of Julie Payette was unnecessary and embarrassing for Canadians.

Though it’s not unheard of to lose confidence in a government, to lose confidence in a governor general is altogether another matter and gives rise to the need for legitimate and thoughtful discussion concerning the value of the role. Did no one see this coming? A governor general is meant to be a pillar of civility, bestowing ceremonial calmness, a steady voice of reason, a silent and unspoken referee, called upon in moments of crisis. As the Queen’s representative, the governor general is supposed to be the institution that is above all pettiness. If the facts are true, Payette failed miserably.

Was there no sage voice of reason that could have prevented the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Richard Wagner, from being stripped of his scarlet robe and signature white mink collar and garbed in an officer’s military jacket, as if someone had proclaimed, ”Ta-da we now have a newly minted acting governor general?” The only thing missing was the curtsey, and bow, followed by a speech from the throne.

With the greatest of deference, while Madame Payette offered the poor health of her father as the reason for her resignation, which is admirable, it doesn’t alleviate the explosive allegations concerning mistreatment of staff and the subsequent findings from an investigation into her behaviour.

This crisis has created a constitutional impairment by diminishing the ability of the officeholder who sits as GG to effectively manage constitutional disputes. This was a self-inflicted wound, politically grotesque. Placing the chief justice in a quasi political role is untenable, and becomes even more so, if he wants to stay, worse yet if he ricochets back to becoming chief justice; his recusal from future issues of constitutional importance would be demanded.

This national humiliation has been exacerbated by carnage of unintended consequences.

Presumably this was one of those moments where country above self would have been the right course of action: a selfless act of contrition, followed by regret, with an admission of guilt, to prevent the calamity of what is now a constitutional car crash.

Canada's top judge is now acting Governor General, but expert urges speedy replacement

TORONTO -- Julie Payette’s resignation amid allegations of workplace harassment means that the chief justice of the Supreme Court will now assume the governor general's powers, but a Crown expert says this temporary appointment should be as brief as possible as it presents potential conflicts.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accepted Payette’s resignation on Thursday following reports of a workplace harassment investigation that sources described to CTV News as “damaging.”

Chief Justice of Canada Richard Wagner will fulfill the role of administrator on an interim basis until Trudeau recommends a new governor general to the Queen, something Trudeau says he will do “in due course.”

Philippe Lagasse, a Carleton University expert on the Westminster system and the Crown, described Payette’s resignation as “a bit sad, really,” and stressed the importance of limiting the amount of time Wagner stays in this role.

“I have to say, as somebody who is concerned about how offices appear in public, it’s really not ideal to have the chief justice of the Supreme Court act as an administrator for any long period of time,” Lagasse told CTV’s Power Play on Thursday.

The reason: the Governor General is in charge of turning bills into law through royal assent. Having an active Supreme Court judge in this role could be potentially problematic down the road, Lagasse said.

And no word from all of the people that were so engrossed in the US Supreme Court appointees and Constitutional issues. Just amazing. Canada just soldiers on, with no GG, all due to the incompetence of our PM. No outcry, no OMG what has this idiot done now, no concerns, valid or otherwise, raised about the horrible conflict of the head of the Supreme Court now also wearing a GG hat. Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.

Cut the Liberals some slack.

If they properly screened people then Justin would have never been allowed to run for office because he dressed up in blackface multiple times and stuffed a banana down his pants while shaking his hips. He wouldn't even have a job!

Nailed it.

The Payette scandal isn't going away. Old Justin looks like an idiot yet again. And yet the Liberal idiots just stay quiet.

Its getting worse.

Several sources with direct knowledge of the final report say Payette's workplace behaviour went beyond screaming at, belittling and publicly humiliating employees — and included unwelcome physical contact that caused some participants in the review to feel threatened.

The only words to describe this woman are not permitted on this board.

She had no choice but to resign jimmy. If she didn't Trudeau would have been forced to remove her.
A Prime Minister can't "remove her". Only the Queen, or King (heaven help us) can do that. Trudeau could call the Queen and tattle on the Gov.Gen. and ask her to remove the Gov. Gen. Trudeau probably gave Payette the options available to her. Resigning or the call to the Queen.

What about the rumoured sordid extra-marital affair between Julie and Justin? Could be the heat is on and Justin wanted to get her out of the limelight before the story hits the media.

There's a story behind the "meeting her at a party" and then ramming her into the GG job without any consultation or vetting, his decision and his alone. Even the blindest Trudeau boot lickers can see that.
