Liberal Housing Plan to Criminalize Hardworking Families

Post by Gone_Fishin »

Another massive flop from the Liberal Party of Canada.

Sell your home, go to jail.

We need adults running this country, not a bunch of juvenile twits with no real-life experience.

Liberal Housing Plan to Criminalize Hardworking Families

The Ontario Real Estate Association is pleased to see housing affordability is a forefront election issue, with all three major federal parties putting ideas on the table to increase housing supply and bring the Canadian Dream of home ownership closer to reach.

However, one aspect of the Liberal Party of Canada’s housing plan would criminalize the ability for hardworking Canadians to choose how to sell their homes, by regulating real estate practices through the criminal code. You cannot fix Canada’s housing crisis by denying millions of hardworking families the choice of how to sell their home and by pitting homeowners against buyers. In fact, this plan would have the opposite effect – negatively impacting Canada’s housing market and making home ownership even more unaffordable.

People are rightly concerned about rising home prices and the shortage of new listings and new homes, especially in Ontario. But the current landscape of bidding wars across Canada’s housing market is emblematic of a much larger issue: there is simply not enough supply to meet demand, leading to multiple offer situations and higher home prices.

That is why it is so concerning that the Liberal Party of Canada believes that buying and selling homes — already one of the most stressful experiences in life — should be done entirely through auctions. If a senior or a family used the traditional offer process, they would be a criminal under the Liberal plan.

snip

Far from making homes more affordable, auctions can drive prices higher, and dangerously push buyers to make rushed decisions involving tens of thousands of dollars in just minutes.

Ontario’s families deserve choice. A home is a family's greatest asset – it’s where they raise their families, how they save for retirement, and consumers should be in the driver's seat when the time comes to sell.”

There's much I don't like about the liberals housing plan, but banning closed-bid auctions hardly criminalizes millions of Canadians.

It would be interesting to see the actual studied differences between an open bid and closed bid auction, and impacts on price inflation. We've all seen and heard the recent experiences where houses are selling for much higher than ask because the buyer is told there are multiple bidders, so they put an extremely high price out there. Having an open auction, where the bid numbers and conditions are known, may prevent some dramatic overspending, which can drive prices up.

It's my asset, don't tell me how to sell it.

The government doesn't get to have more control over my things. As much as they think housing is some special commodity now and must be heavily regulated, it's still an asset individuals own.

If you want to have a say in how an asset is sold, buy one and then you may dictate what you want.

The control initiated by the Liberals on housing sales is in line with their leaked policy paper on taxing the capital gains on your principle residence.

Do people think Trudeau forced you to disclose the sale of your family home on your income tax return just for *bleep*'n'giggles?

People should also remember Freeland's remarks where she said she was coming after people's savings and assets.
