The litany of racial slurs inserted into the comments section of an online Conservative leadership debate Wednesday was not surprising, candidate Leslyn Lewis said the next day.

Lewis, Erin O’Toole and Derek Sloan were debating B.C.-related issues when for nearly a minute, slurs started filling the chat box of the video conference program.

Lewis, who is the first Black candidate to run for the Conservative party leadership, said she saw them and then closed the chat screen so she could focus on the event.

“The racist comments during last night’s debate which were directed at me, Black people and Jewish people were sadly not surprising,” she said in a statement Thursday.

“This past week we saw much more blatant displays of antisemitism in Toronto, and it has not been an irregular occurrence for me to encounter racist individuals during this campaign.”

The victim card is the most powerful card in the political deck. Trouble is, this victim card turns out to be a forgery. Worse than racism is trying to manufacture it and point where it doesn't exist. The Green Party went through something similar during the last campaign. Any criticism of the leader was called racism and anti-Semitism.

except that the Greens are loaded with anti-Semites, so there was that too. In this case calling Leslyn Lewis "loopy" is. She's not loopy, and it's clear as day why the racist Liberals are attacking her, because they are scared of women of colour. There can be no other reason, and this flows right from the top, as we've seen Justin run off strong women of colour in his party. The CPC are an awesome party and a juggernaut powerhouse, and the Liberals having lost two elections in a row are running scared. I just don't get why they have to go so low as to play the racism thing.

Can anyone say for sure what the broken CPC's position is today re the vaccine requirements to enter the House?

In the last few days, the leader has swapped positions at least four times, and said one thing in English and the opposite in French.

Does the party try to appease the moderates on odd days, and the redneck hillbillies on even days?

You and millions of other Canadians continue to suffer from CPC O'Toole whiplash. However, to some people it only shows WHAT A GREAT JOB ERIN IS DOING! GO ERIN GO! You are the ultimate policy card flipper. If you keep on doing it fast enough no one will really know your position and all members of your base will be pleased with your blurred policy positions.

Not the way to run a political party especially one charged with the Parliamentary position of Offical Opposition.

As much as Leslyn Lewis may be a woman of character and intelligence, her position as a strong social conservative would do little to mend the cracks within the CPC, and may just alienate moderates within the party. At the very least it would drive away "swing voters" who look upon the far right with disapproval.
