Re: Marco Mendicino should resign
It’s unfortunate that Canadians opinions regarding the invocation of the Emergencies Act were based more on their opinion of the Truckers, than on the constitutionality of using such a draconian measure to end an unpopular protest.
Lost on many is the fact that if the Government is allowed to get away with using an Act designed to deal with domestic terrorism, to instead curb a politically damaging movement, future Governments might choose to do the same and, next time, the Government in question might be of a different political stripe.
In other words, if you cheered on the Liberals for using a sledgehammer to curb a perceived right wing protest, you are opening the door to allowing a future right leaning Government to use the same tactics to curb a left leaning protest.
Suspending Canadians civil liberties to deal with a largely peaceful, albeit noisy, protest in our Nation’s capital was an affront to democracy. To avoid such abuse of a Law intended only to be used in a very specific circumstance, the Law requires the Government provide a detailed explanation of why they felt such an extreme measure was necessary. Yet here we are, several months later, still waiting for that detailed explanation.
All we’ve received from the Government so far are half truths, outright lies, and implausible excuses. And that should be of concern to ALL Canadians, regardless of their personal partisan leanings. Because once we allow one Government to circumvent our Constitution, we’re giving a free pass to all future Governments to do the same.
Mr. Mendocino either lied to the Parliamentary committee, or was misled by his own staff. Either way, HE is responsible for the misinformation coming out of HIS department, and should resign.

Also very concerning is the fact that some people refuse to see the illegal over-reach of this gov’t that trampled on our basic rights and freedoms, but instead take a partisan approach agreeing with the illegality.

Re: Marco Mendicino should resign
Good post Merry, Looking at this from nothing, but a concerned citizen of our country, no argument should come to what you have written. Make no concern over the fact that what this government just did regarding the lies and deceit used against the people and the courts to enact this act is nothing but the most despicable action we have ever seen by any government. All our response to what took place should be a concern to everyone. How ever, we know that for far too many, politics' and support for a party or certain leader has become more emotional for many and not based solely on merit and accountability.Merry wrote: ↑Jun 12th, 2022, 9:31 am It’s unfortunate that Canadians opinions regarding the invocation of the Emergencies Act were based more on their opinion of the Truckers, than on the constitutionality of using such a draconian measure to end an unpopular protest.

Your statement above, I high lighted is spot on.
I do not care one bit which party was responsible for the recent actions we are concerned about. It was wrong. It should be illegal. It should be punished. The very thought that it will not be, does indeed set precedent as to future comings. So those enjoying the ignorance method of accountability all for political reasoning remember your un ethical stance.
Punishment, accountability should be expected for one lie, but pretty much every aspect used by this government to claim the act has now been proven to be a lie. All the major concern's were false, manipulated, misleading, and the media made sure they manipulated many minds with it.

Maybe they're smart enough not to try to defend the indefensible.
Still, to some here it seems, "Okay, your silence means war!"

Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair: police did not ask for Emergencies Act
COPS DIDN'T ASK FOR ACT
The Canadian Press - Jun 15, 2022 / 6:23 am | Story: 371943
Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland say they didn't hear recommendations from police to enact the Emergencies Act.
Both ministers were called to testify before the special parliamentary committee that's tasked with exploring why the government declared a national emergency amid blockades at border crossings and in downtown Ottawa in February.
“I’m not aware of any recommendation of law enforcement,” Blair said Tuesday. "Quite frankly, this is a decision of government."
Blair said during the "Freedom Convoy" he spoke regularly with police who "were clearly having difficulties" restoring law and order, and that his role was to try to figure out why that was happening.
In response to Sen. Claude Carignan, who asked if Blair was aware of any such recommendation, he said, "Frankly I would have been quite surprised if the police had actually made a policy recommendation or asked for any legislative authority."
"I do not believe that would have been an appropriate thing for law enforcement to ask, and they did not ask," Blair said.
Freeland, for her part, didn't directly answer questions about who around the cabinet table suggested using the act.
“I would like to take the personal responsibility for that decision, it was my opinion it was the correct decision," she said.
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino has been under scrutiny since he told the committee in April that police asked for the government to invoke the act.
"The advice we received was to invoke the Emergencies Act," Mendicino said at the time.
Since then, the RCMP and Ottawa police have said they did not ask for the act to be used, and the deputy minister for public safety told the same committee that Mendicino's words were misunderstood.

Freeland's appearance before the committee was, in her own words, "adversarial" at times.
Several members accused her of not answering questions, being evasive, and of not bringing any new information.
She cited news reports and the City of Ottawa, among others, in her answers to questions and recommended committee members direct some questions to others including the RCMP.
Bloc Québécois MP Rhéal Fortin was unable to get a direct answer to his questions about what steps the federal government tried taking before using the act, which Freeland called a last resort.
NDP MP Matthew Green repeatedly asked whether the minister took notes at high-level meetings she had with bank officials about the economic measures in the emergency declaration.
After getting no response during his given time for questions, Green said "that is unreal."
Conservative MP Larry Brock said Freeland "wasted 90 minutes of precious committee time."
“I appreciate many of us here are elected and we have a partisan job to do,” Freeland said at one point during the meeting.

Except this didn't happen...at all. Most Canadians supported and applauded the Liberals actions to end the illegal occupation and protect the rights and freedoms of Ottawans.

Apparently having "a partisan job to do" is more important than serving the people who elected them, more important than their oath of office, more important than personal integrity, and FAR more important than getting to the truth.

Good grief. When parties fulfill the commitments made to those who voted for them it's 100% serving the people who elected them. And the Liberals fulfilled their commitment to protect the rights and freedoms of Canadians who were being terrorized by far right occupiers.

Yup, and as the public safety minister it's Mr. Mendicino's job to protect the safety of Canadians in Ottawa who were being terrorized by far right occupiers, and Mr. Mendicino did his job well when he restored Ottawans rights and freedoms.
Thank you Mr. Mendicino for standing up for Canadians rights and freedoms!
