Michael Taube: Chrystia Freeland, this is no time to start a Formula 1 racing career

I just returned home from a vacation to Florence with my wife and son. At the tail-end of this wonderful trip, I caught wind that a federal minister in Canada had received a $273 speeding ticket. A quick search on my iPhone revealed that the minister in question was Chrystia Freeland.

My immediate reaction? Uproarious laughter.

This wasn’t because the deputy prime minister and finance minister had broken the law and received a fine for driving well over the speed limit in Alberta. Many drivers do foolish things on our roads and highways. Rather, it’s because Freeland, who had proudly revealed earlier this summer that she didn’t own a car, was the brand spanking new speed demon of Wild Rose Country.

As Post readers may recall, Freeland opened up about this little tidbit during a press conference in Prince Edward Island in late July.

She was asked about the 61c/ litre federal carbon tax that was hitting the car-driving tourist industry hard. A reporter noted there had also been pushback from local politicians and provincial governments in the sense that “they’re not opposed to it, but it’s coming too soon, too fast. They need more time to adapt.” The Deputy PM said, “You know what I say? I do really understand. I really understand the challenges,” but then went off on a tangent shortly thereafter. “A fact that still shocks my Dad is I don’t actually own a car because I live in downtown Toronto. I’m like, I don’t know, 300 meters from the nearest subway. I walk, I take the subway. I make my kids walk and ride their bikes and take the subway. It’s actually healthier for our family. I can live that way.”

That’s nice, but so what? Freeland’s experience isn’t necessarily everyone else’s experience. There are many Canadians living in communities who need to use their cars to go to work, take their kids to school, get groceries, visit their elderly parents and so on. They can’t walk, take the subway (if they have one) or ride a bike to get from place to place – and will never have access to this particular luxury.

Plus, how can the minister even slightly sympathize with Prince Edward Islanders and others when the crippling carbon tax barely affects her and her family?

Freeland’s comment was elitist, out of touch — and what more than a few Canadians would have expected a left-leaning urbanite Torontonian to say. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre also posted a short video on Twitter (now X) with the following description, “Freeland’s message to Prince Edward Islanders worried about 61c/litre carbon tax: move to Toronto and get a bike!!!” Yes, it was strategically clipped to emphasize the worst of her remarks — but there’s no question that she made them.

But while the deputy PM may not drive all that much, she clearly knows how to step on the gas when she does.

If watching that “performance” wasn’t bad enough, with all the platitudes and waffles, what irritates me most is the use of the phrase, over and over again that she and Trudeau use as time filler endlessly, is “we are working hard”.

I could say what I really think, but it’d be removed for blasphemy.
