Alberta's top court said Tuesday the federal government's environmental impact law is unconstitutional, and Ottawa almost immediately announced its plan to appeal.

The Alberta Court of Appeal said in its non-binding opinion in the reference question concerning the Impact Assessment Act that the controversial law is an "existential threat" to the division of powers guaranteed by the Constitution.

Jewish members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees have filed a human rights claim against their union alleging discrimination and antisemitism, including recent messages seen as cheering for the deadly Hamas attacks on Israel.

Although triggered by social media posts by a CUPE local and CUPE Ontario’s president Fred Hahn after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel, the complaint to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario by about 25 Jewish members of CUPE alleges antisemitic incidents spanning at least five years by Canada’s largest labour union.

“The respondents have collectively engaged in systemic discrimination against the complainants by promoting and engaging in antisemitism,” says the complaint, filed Monday.
“This has caused the complainants to feel isolated, unwelcome, scared, silenced, discriminated against, threatened and harassed.”

Carrie Silverberg, a CUPE member from Vaughan, Ont, is one of the complainants. She resigned from the executive of CUPE Local 1734 after years of futiley fighting antisemitism in her union, she said.

“Change wasn’t coming, it was just becoming more and more toxic, and I felt more and more unsafe and less heard,” she said in an interview.

“Enough is enough. This is not the way I would want to bring about change. I was hoping to educate, hoping to work together, but clearly that’s not working.

“Those tweets, the day after the massacre and horrendous terrorist attack — for him to be celebrating the death of Jews? I cried.”

CUPE needs to be decertified and disbanded if their leadership continually forgets about the workers and pursues a left wing anti-Semitic agenda.

As evidenced by Ms Silverberg's comments, CUPE brass is becoming more and more toxic and more and more anti-Semitic.

The industrial union model is a harbour for these racist old thugs, where they feel protected and surrounded by like minds.

Enough is enough. Clear that toxic sludge from your union brass, or shut 'er down. There's no place in a civil society for such disgusting behaviour. The NDP's support for this anti-Semitic beaviour is equally deserving of condemnation.

With almost 3,800 delegates registered, the United Conservative Party’s convention was the largest political annual general meeting in Alberta’s history. It was also arguably the tamest.

During debates over party policy resolutions on Saturday, there were no head-on collisions because the traffic was flowing in one direction: to the far right.

And members are thus hoping to force Smith in the same direction just as she’s trying to demonstrate to Albertans she is not the same right-wing zealot who won the UCP leadership race a year ago.

During the convention, the few people who dared raise objections against simplistic right-wing policies were simply rolled over like so many speed bumps."
