What's the big deal about the Facebook banning Canadian news?
Why is everybody making such a big deal about Meta ie. Facebook and Instagram banning Canadian news content?
Maybe I'm missing the point or have not looked at all the angles but can you not get your news from other sources besides Facebook? I mean, personally I use Castanet for my local news. I've also been known to enjoy reading and viewing other media platforms. Far as I can tell, I still have access to sites from all over Canada, the US, Europe wherever. Honestly I don't use Facebook all that often and there are options to media all over the web, one is not stuck getting their news feed from Facebook.
Im having a hard time trying to see the logic in why I should be concerned if Facebook blocks and doesn't show news to me.
Am I overlooking something?

Its only a minor inconvenience in that you now have to actually GO to a news media site; you cannot find them directly on FB with any form of news. I don't have a problem with that; however its a bit annoying when you can now not even post a LINK on FB to a news story; the site won't allow it. Again, just "change"; something that humans dread..lol.Idwell wrote: ↑Aug 17th, 2023, 1:08 pm Why is everybody making such a big deal about Meta ie. There are zero problems with this.
Basically Facebook is mad they can't keep skimming other people's work for free.
Meta is a big pile of scum.
They are making it a big deal because it will cut into their mega profits.
Australia took them to task, and won.
Facebook is for dog and kitten stories.

I have no problem with Facebook and Instagram doing this. Those are their sites, the government just wants to jump in and say
"hey, look what were doing for democracy. Were taking on the big guys."
I don't use Facebook or Instagram, I go directly to the various news sites.

To me , it proves that mainstream media is controlled by Big Money..
It's not about what's important to you , or me , or anyone else for that matter ...
And it's not about what you need to know but rather what THEY want you to know ..
It's wrong .. Straight up .

I am connected to family and friends all over Canada and the world. We connect through Facebook. It’s great for us all to link up and share. We often post from our hometown news sites to share with each other. It’s very interesting. So if you don’t use Facebook it’s not an issue but if you use it as a main communication tool then it might..

Same. Really do not see Canadian news sources to be reliable anymore myself. Find them using their influence to manipulate most basic stories into some sort of reaffirming propaganda coming from our societies woke/victimhood and virtue signalling society.Babba_not_Gump wrote: ↑Aug 17th, 2023, 3:52 pm I have no problem with Facebook and Instagram doing this. Interesting the position all these big old style media sources have got themselves into.
Their all desperate for viewership because of their own failing.

Find a left wing news media site… then find right wing news media site.
Chances are somewhere in the middle is probably the truth.

We should just ban Facebook.

I have absolutely no problem with this at all.

What gets me is if you even post a news link it cannot be posted.
At this time with Kelowna Fire issues, others in Canada may not be aware of the severity. I feel at this time there should be no issue posting a new link..
Was part of this as a result of the current Canadian Leadership or lack there of?

We have no current leadership so a lack of same was already a given
Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.
