Re: What's the big deal about the Facebook banning Canadian news?
Facebook is what you make of it. You choose what you share. I am not really a person who shares a lot. Some of my friends and family share everything. I am able to choose my ad preference. And I have discovered quite a few great shops that I routinely shop due to those ads. I am able to be a part of my favourite authors community and discover new authors that I would not have otherwise. I don’t watch tv. I could get rid of my tv and be totally happy. Through Facebook I discover new music, not just the genre that is my usual go to. I have met people around the world and learned about culture from the people that live it, not just what is put in a blurb in a book. I enjoy reading input from others about different topics. Lighthearted subjects and deep philosophical discussions. I enjoy the connections of family and friends. A Facebook post is different from an email. Much more interactive.
But, Facebook is not for everyone. My partner rarely uses it. Maybe a few times a year.
So, if you don’t enjoy it then don’t use it, but why someone feels the need to condemn others who do use it I will never know.

Facebook has been a great source of information among neighbourhoods especially in a crisis such as we are encountering now. Love the community spirit.

Ah yes. I heard about that. Apparently Thailand may block Facebook because of all the scam ads. I don't use Facebook so I am not sure how bad it is. Sounds like a dumpster fire. Biggest problem I have with Facebook is too many people I know are absorbed by it. It is also a source of too much garbage information.Nedroj wrote: ↑Aug 23rd, 2023, 7:46 amThe biggest problem I have with FB isn't the blocking of news, but rather all the ads I see while scrolling on it trying to see what my family has been up to. Its to the point where there are more ads than actual ppl posting on it. And a lot of these ads are scams.Jlabute wrote: ↑Aug 22nd, 2023, 10:49 am
Ditto. Facebook is the worlds largest time waster and hackers delight. They say they have three billion users, but I am sure those include a lot of dormant and duplicate accounts. Mind you, if all Canadians quit, 3 billion - 40 million is still practically 3 billion. lol.
If anything, young users are leaving Facebook. Facebook may not have a bright future.
I was reading somewhere that in 10 years there will be more deceased ppl profiles on FB than alive ones. It is a dying page that we millennials helped build and its only us that is keeping it alive now.

It's easy to get rid of the garbage. I have no problem with Facebook and the sites I am on. It's a big factor on getting current information in one's neighbourhood and staying in touch with family and friends. A great tool if used right.

Facebook is a great tool for ex-pats, not only for staying up to date with family and friends back home but for getting information on events, resources and services, and opportunities here through groups in our adopted country. I have never used Facebook for news or politics.

Neither do I and I never realized so many depended on Facebook for that until recently.

Especially sad when you realize that most of these people are only getting "news" or political viewpoints that already match their preconceived ideas. Little wonder our society is becoming so divided, entrenched and polarized.

I’ve never used FB, but will defend to the death YOUR right to use it however you wish, in a fight against a corrupt govt intent on shutting you out of the site.
This govt will use ANY excuse to keep you from hearing about their misdeeds. Using “payment to sources” is one.
Free speech is the enemy

Nothing is shut down, nothing is restricted.
A minor inconvenience for some. Those that use the worst source in the world for factual information.
Facebook's business model is heinous at best, and one complaint is any government paying to advertise on that electronic piece of toilet paper.
I googled Trudeau is a problem.

There is no restriction on anyone writing anything. Facebook doesn't want it's free ride to end. Probably flawed as always with this government, but Meta deserves no support whatsoever.

Some of these media sources had and used a face book account to pedal their platforms and beliefs. I had no problem them doing so as without opportunity within media such as meta, cbc could not survive. To bad they cant manage a successful platform on their own. If they all feed off each other so be it.bernie428 wrote: ↑Aug 25th, 2023, 12:40 pm Nothing is shut down, nothing is restricted.

Agreed, if they feed off each other, so be it. Why not.
If that was so, then wouldn't they be fighting this bill as well?
Only the government and taxpayers would give a crap about Meta paying zero taxes while making money on Canadian soil. The part about paying for stories shared would be stranger still if media ((big or small) were also getting screwed this way, as they appear to be for the bill.

The only propaganda I see on my Facebook is PP.
In the reels, no matter how many times I hit 'see less', it keeps showing up.
That means his crew paid to have those requests ignored.
I don't like it when any advertiser does it.

Obvious that the Left is supremely buttock-hurt that Canadians want this friggin’ awful, corrupt govt to keep their filthy hands off dictating to social media sites what they must pay(blackmail) to the govt’s pet mouthpieces.
Simply stupid to expect the media giants to be pushed around by a punk-oriented, politically correct and corrupt govt.
Trudeau chose another fight he will not win and I say….goody!
