Re: Another shooting rocks the world
All guns are made to kill. It's up to the human operating the tool that decides what they are about to shoot. Legally they are only allowed to be used for hunting animals and everyone that has a PAL or RPAL has agreed to follow this law and accept responsibility.
Cars are designed to get people from point A to point B but they have been used to kill more people than most mass shootings. Legally they are only allowed to be used as a means of transportation and everyone that has a license to drive agrees to this law and responsibility.
We just had a street racer cause an accident and almost hit a house while driving a Mustang Sports Car. I don't see ANYONE demanding that Mustangs be banned or that all vehicles should have governors installed. Back in the height of the Fast and Furious movies, I didn't see anyone demanding that all Subaru STI, Lancer Evos, and Honda Civic Si's be banned for being the most popular street racing cars. Street racing is illegal btw even with a driver's license. Yet Sport Shooting is perfectly legal and the most popular sport shooting rifle is an AR15.
In my opinion, there is no difference between someone street racing and causing an accident killing someone and someone grabbing a gun and shooting someone. In both cases, the human is 100% at fault yet we tend to place the blame on the Gun but never the vehicle.
Baseball Bats, clubs, fists and feet are used more often in Canada to commit murder than firearms are year after year. Why don't we ban committing murder with baseball bats, fists, and feet at the same time?

In that example, the admin may well have been too concerned with not rocking the "diversity, inclusion, equity" boat to respond appropriately when told more than once the child had brought a gun to school.
That's a whole different level of crazy. Blaming the outcome solely on guns is a means of avoiding responsibility for failed priorities.

I don't place blame on the gun in this case. I further don't think teachers need guns in school.
We today put such a bad outlook on firearms. Think about your home and consider how many things in plain view that could potentially kill a human. There are easily 10 in my Livingroom where I currently sit, look out for the kitchen.
I think parents have to go back to parenting. We think every gun owner needs to be mentally capable to own. Possibly every parent who wishes to create should be capable of parenting and mentally stable!
The days of feeling ill when you heard someone was intentionally killed are gone, why is that? It is too common I feel due to lack of parenting we have some truly screwed up humans walking this earth.

In that case it seems to me that the Parents and the Admin people who were told he had a gun are 100% responsible for the teacher being shot.rustled wrote: ↑Jan 30th, 2023, 10:07 am In that example, the admin may well have been too concerned with not rocking the "diversity, inclusion, equity" boat to respond appropriately when told more than once the child had brought a gun to school.

To me, the people blaming these shootings entirely on guns (and suggesting eliminating the guns would stop people from harming others) are using "guns" as a distraction for the natural outcomes of other societal failures.

Yet daily we see mass shooting tragedies out of the USA. Why is that? Do they have more share of crazies than any other countries?
I think not, however they have the lion's share of guns. Is there some correlation between the two? Sure, without guns, crazies will use cars, or knives, or whatever. Risk reduction. Cars, and knives have specific purposes, guns purpose is to kill.
Thoughts and prayers are with the families of gun violence. There, that will show them.

The parents seem to be taking responsibility. There will be repercussions for admin as well.Bsuds wrote: ↑Jan 30th, 2023, 10:16 amIn that case it seems to me that the Parents and the Admin people who were told he had a gun are 100% responsible for the teacher being shot.rustled wrote: ↑Jan 30th, 2023, 10:07 am In that example, the admin may well have been too concerned with not rocking the "diversity, inclusion, equity" boat to respond appropriately when told more than once the child had brought a gun to school.

What we're still left with, though, is the societal pressure on our institutions to avoid doing anything that will result in accusations of insensitivity or worse - resulting in our institutions being reluctant to prioritize children and staff's health, wellbeing and safety.
And we can't hold these parents and the admin responsible for our collective part in that pressure to avoid being accused of insensitivity or worse - nor can we blame it on guns.
There are plenty of examples of similar societal failures leading to shootings. Taking away guns will prevent some tragedies, but it won't address the pernicious undermining of community safeguards that results in shootings like the one used in this example.

Actually the US is far from being the gun violence center of earth. Way worse in some south American countries.Kodidad wrote: ↑Jan 30th, 2023, 10:26 am Yet daily we see mass shooting tragedies out of the USA. Why is that? Do they have more share of crazies than any other countries?

Canada had under 200 gun murders per year up until recently. It's 270ish per year now which is still incredibly low for a population of 39ish million.
We don't have a gun problem by any metric. We have a political agenda problem with current govt playing into the natural insecurities city people have.
Some may view my politically incorrect opinions as harsh and may be offended by them. Some think political correctness will be our undoing.

I partially agree with you. We don't hear as much about gun violence in the Southern Hemisphere. Probably because we are more cognizant of news coming out of the states and Canada (as well as EU).oldtrucker wrote: ↑Jan 30th, 2023, 10:40 am

I have this firm conviction that we shouldn't shoot anything we aren't prepared to eat. Hunting rifles are necessary tools for many who live off the land. Handguns and automatic weapons (WMD) reserved only for law enforcement and military. Tools for specific circumstances.

What they have done is take something that gets the attention of the average Canadian and bringing it to light. They then use the gun factor as look what we are doing... at-a-boy Justin!oldtrucker wrote: ↑Jan 30th, 2023, 10:40 am

Canadians still look at loss of life somewhat seriously. More so with those over 60 I'd suggest. They then make these people believe their initiatives are a priority. The population over 60 who don't consider who is being killed, those who are in the wrong business. These voters feel safer and give their support. I feel if you're not selling and dealing drugs your chances of being shot are slim in Canada.
If the numbers were shown what percentage of the gun shooting victims in Canada were crime related such as drug dealers killing druggies you might find less concern. If people realized that the guns used in Crimes are not legally registered or bought in Canada, they might scrutinize government for lack of effort.
Those thinking this Government is doing the right thing if they had the knowledge, might change their views.

Source, you think these gang land shooting are register guns?? If you have a Criminal record in Canada you cannot purchase a gun as you have no PAL.
Therefore the source is likely the USA!! I tried the government site and of course they wouldn't want you to know that. I did take the time to fill the survey out suggesting they failed to include that information.

Source?
Sheesh, it's common knowledge with everyone in Canada. Well, except our federal government.

Re: Another shooting rocks the world
Why would handguns be restricted to law enforcement and the military only? A citizen can have a high-powered 308 hunting rifle that would kill anything 1000 meters away and go through body armor but can't have a handgun that 80% of people can't even hit a target 10' away? Again you are trying to tell people to give up their hobby of sport shooting competitions with pistols. The same as many are trying to tell others that prefer using the AR platform for their sport shooting rifle choice.Kodidad wrote: ↑Jan 30th, 2023, 11:22 amI partially agree with you. All Automatic weapons have been banned in Canada for over 30 years.
Also just to add, roughly half of all those firearm deaths in Canada are gang-related.
Just to clarify, why would Law Enforcement need automatic weapons if their sole purpose is to kill humans? Are you saying the government should be able to use automatic weapons to kill their own citizens en mass if (as you put it)
Tools for specific circumstances.
