Terrible 7.5 earthquake for Japan, wide spread serious damage, fires, destroyed infrastructure and tsunamis.

Japan dispatches 1,000 military personnel to quake zone
From CNN's Mayumi Maruyama

Japan is dispatching 1,000 military personnel to help rescue and recovery efforts following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Monday, the country's defense minister has said.

Minoru Kihara told reporters some members of the country's Self-Defense Forces have already reached the cities of Wajima and Suzu in Ishikawa prefecture.

Another 8,500 are on standby, he added.

Officials in several cities in Ishikawa prefecture reported damaged buildings, power outages, fires and cracks in roads.

A good analysis of the latest Japanese earthquake in which 48 people have been known to have died. This article addresses why that figure is actually low by international standards: preparedness.

Yesterday I was so impressed that 1,000 rescue personnel had been deployed to the west coast of Japan.

Today, gobsmacked to see that number has risen to 3,000.
This remarkable response took place in less than 24 hours of the earthquake.

Anyone remember how long it took to receive help from the federal Govt when BC fires burned out of control for months?

I’ve been squawking about this issue for years and still see no improvement for aid in times of disasters

This plane collision has a connection to rescue efforts in Japan’s recent earthquake.

B.c. had I believe about 5 deaths due tothe wildfires last year, with out of control fires over months.
Japan death toll hasn't even begun to be tallied yet, but already 68 dead, no doubt many more to come.
I'd say many lives potentially saved by our emergencie plans.

Difficult to compare forest fires that burn for months to an earthquake that takes 5 minutes.

So let's compare Lower mainland's or Vancouver Island's preparedness for the next Big One. Do people have enough supplies on hand to last weeks? because that's what it will take, before help might arrive. There will be many Japanese trapped wherever for weeks to come, can't all rely on authorities to save them. The suggestion to have supplies for 72hours is ridiculous if there actually was a major earthquake in b.c..

My heart is with Japanese people. However, I'm surprised there was no tsunami this time. Gordon, what are your thoughts on this?

All kinds of photos of Japan's damages are surfacing on all forms of social media. Unbelievable! 32,000 people displaced with limited eletricity and water too. Death toll has risen but due to preparedness and construction, nothing like other countries.

Japan is as close to perfection as possible. It’s a way of life there.

Unlike other countries that have suffered from disasters, they do not appeal outside of the country for international help or money for repairs. (Haiti springs to mind)

They’ll clean the mess up pdq, mourn the dead, rebuild and get back to normal in no time flat.

As hurricanes are the norm in southern USA territory, so are earthquakes in beautiful Japan.

I bet you, the biggest problem Japanese have is with GPS location services. Because, everytime a big quake hits, the whole country actually moves.
