Hurricanes

Hurricanes

Postby Frisk » Sep 10th, 2018, 4:20 pm

Figured I'd start a thread to post links and info on hurricanes. Been following hurricane florence for a few days, it looks like it could be a bad one.

Florence quickly escalated from a class 1 to a class 4 or 5 when she crossed into the warmer water of the Gulf Stream. Many of the buoys in the Gulf Stream have a water temperature of 29 to 30 degrees C. That's warmer than ever.

It is crazy how warm the Gulf is. I find hurricanes absolutely fascinating but Florence is looking pretty scary....

Will be interesting to see if the prevalence, intensity and reach of Nature's air conditioning will increase as the planet, particularly the oceans, warm up

I just found this cam, 34 miles East of the North Carolina coast.

The Hurricane has been downgraded to 2 from 4. The 5 reports were scare tactics to get people to leave. The real issue is not the force of this storm but how slowly it is moving. That is the real danger. The amount of rain will be massive and the flooding will be catastrophic. Most storms move through and weaken but this one seems to want to park itself and just keep raining and raining.

but forecasters warned that the widening storm — and its likelihood of lingering around the coast day after day after day — will bring surging ocean water and torrential rain.

"It truly is really about the whole size of this storm," National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said. "The larger and the slower the storm is, the greater the threat and the impact -- and we have that."

There is even less of that flag left since the last time I looked.

I think this link is well worth repeating for the ease of access to those (like me) that are really interested.

Since there has been significant damage done to this flag from this morning when Ferri first posted this link and now, I have done a screen capture as it is now, for future reference when I check it again.

We've lost visual, but the sound's still there. Night time? Not seeing any lightning.
