Monkeypox: Biden promises accelerated virus response as more states declare emergencies

President Joe Biden has appointed two top federal officials to coordinate his administration’s response to monkeypox, the White House said on Tuesday, as more states declared emergencies to help boost vaccines and other resources to combat the virus.

The top officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will coordinate the U.S. response across the federal government even as Biden’s administration has stopped short of declaring a national emergency.

The appointments come as the United States aims to bolster vaccination efforts to slow the spread of a monkeypox outbreak that has infected more than 5,800 Americans.

“Over the coming weeks… the administration will advance and accelerate the United States’ monkeypox response to mitigate the spread of the virus, protect individuals most at risk of contracting the virus, and care for those who have been afflicted with it,” the White House said in a statement.

California and Illinois on Monday announced a state of emergency over monkeypox, following New York’s declaration last week.

Robert Fenton, a FEMA regional administrator, will serve as the White House monkeypox coordinator and Demetre Daskalakis, CDC’s HIV prevention chief, will serve as deputy coordinator.

The pair will coordinate Biden’s response “including equitably increasing the availability of tests, vaccinations and treatments,” the White House said. The administration has estimated it may need nearly $7 billion to combat the outbreak, according to the Washington Post.

Paul Krugman is an imbecile.
New York Times' Paul Krugman mocked for claiming the economy is experiencing a 'Biden Boom'
Krugman's 'Biden boom' argument is 'the biggest' 'big lie', argued one columnist

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman doubled down on his claims that the economy is experiencing a "Biden boom" despite a record 40-year-high inflation and the United States entering a recession.

"Since I get lots of mockery for having talked about a "Biden boom", I thought I'd share a chart," Krugman tweeted.

Krugman neglected to mention that most of the jobs added during the Biden presidency are reflective of a reopening of the economy after the government imposed COVID-19 lock-downs. The lock-downs artificially pushed the United States into a recession, leaving millions unemployed and harming small businesses.

Biden signs executive order in attempt to help low-income women pay for abortions if they have to cross state lines

President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed an executive order that his administration says will help low-income people pay for abortion services if they have to travel out of state to obtain them.

The order, according to administration officials, paves the way for Medicaid to cover abortion-related costs for people who have traveled from states where their abortion is banned to states where it is not.

But Biden and other officials on Wednesday provided few details about how the change would work -- or a timeline for it to be implemented.

"Today, I'm signing the second executive order that responds to the health care crisis that has unfolded since the Supreme Court overturned Roe [v. Wade] and that women are facing all across America," he said at a White House event.

It remained unclear how this change to Medicaid coverage would avoid legal run-ins with the Hyde Amendment, a federal law that prohibits federal government dollars from being spent on abortion except in cases of rape, incest and to save the pregnant person's life.

Already, people covered by Medicaid have extremely limited abortion coverage in 34 states and the District of Columbia, while just 16 states use their own funds to aid abortion coverage under Medicaid.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Wednesday the order "will not violate the Hyde Amendment," but she did not elaborate.

Biden's order directs the secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to pursue these changes, and Jean-Pierre deferred specific questions about how the change would work to that agency.

The Democrats’ Collective-Action Problem

On the menu today: One member of the Democratic National Committee wants to put the organization on the record as officially supporting Joe Biden’s running for another term in 2024; Warner Bros. makes an extraordinary decision about a nearly completed film; and a hearty thanks to all of you out there supporting my fiction writing.

Uncertainty Generates Anxiety, in Life and in 2024 Politics

On paper, everyone in politics should be focused on the upcoming midterms, not the presidential election two years after that. But the increasingly loud speculation and grumbles of discontent reflect a circumstance that Americans haven’t seen since the late 1960s: a first-term president who could conceivably not run for another term

More embarrassing Trump disasters fixed by the awesome Biden administration!

Way to go, President Biden! :130:
Biden administration task force reunites 400 migrant families separated under Trump

The Biden administration has reunited 400 children with their parents after they were separated as migrants crossing the southern border under the Trump administration, said Michelle Brané, the executive director of the Family Reunification Task Force.

More than 5,000 families were separated under Trump’s 2018 “zero tolerance” policy and a 2017 pilot program and advocates estimate over 1,000 remain separated. Because the Trump administration did not keep records of which children were separated and where they were sent, the task force and lawyers working on behalf of separated families have had a difficult time identifying families to offer them the chance of reunification.

In the majority of recently reunited cases, Brané said, the parents were deported while the children remained in the U.S. Now, parents are given the opportunity to come to the U.S. on paid travel, bring other members of their family who are dependent on them, and live and work in the U.S. legally for three years.

Lawyers for the families have advocated for legal permanent status on behalf of separated families, but so far the Biden administration has not agreed to that provision.

Brané said the reunification also includes mental health services for families both before and after reunification. She said many of the families have suffered from profound mental health issues after their separation and counseling is often needed before they reunify.

“You don’t want to just throw kids into an environment with a parent they may not have seen for five years,” Brané said.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order soon after he took office establishing a task force to find and reunite separated families, and the task force began reunifying families in May 2021. Previously, other families were reunited on their own or through the help of lawyers.

Lee Gelernt, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union representing the separated families in a class action lawsuit, said, “We are thrilled for the hundreds of children who will finally be with their parents after all these years, but we are not even halfway through reuniting all the families that remain separated by the Trump administration.

Lindsey Graham: China flexing its muscles because Biden's admin is 'dumb and weak'

Lindsey Graham claims the Biden admin was 'undercutting' efforts to send a strong message to China

China is flexing their muscles because Biden's administration is dumb and weak. Every time Putin threatened Ukraine, we got weak. Instead of imposing sanctions when he built up his army on the border, we didn't want to provoke him. Instead of flowing in weapons to the Ukraine before the invasion, we didn't want to provoke Putin. So what are we doing in Taiwan? I have legislation with Bob Menendez, a Democrat, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, to give more economic aid to Taiwan, more military assistance to Taiwan. And the administration, the Biden administration is working to kill the bill.

I think calling Senile Joe "dumb and weak" is being far too kind.

How Biden's big win in the Senate could change America and reshape his fortunes

If the US House soon passes the Senate's landmark climate change and health care bill, it will help validate the Democrats' monopoly on political power in Washington and hand Joe Biden a notable presidential legacy ahead of November's midterm elections.

The measure finally squeezed through the Senate after an exhausting and dramatic round-the-clock marathon that stretched into Sunday afternoon -- a major breakthrough following months of Democratic infighting that gouged deep divides in the party.
The Inflation Reduction Act may not live up to its name and cut the cost of living. It dashed some big dreams of progressives who wanted it to do more. And its final passage may come too late to save Democrats in the midterms. But it's still an enormous win for the party that seemed impossible just weeks ago.

In a goal Democrats have been chasing for decades, the legislation will for the first time give Medicare the power to negotiate the cost of a limited basket of prescription drugs, thereby bringing down costs. In extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, it could save health care coverage for countless people. And in spending nearly $370 billion to reduce emissions that contribute to climate change, it goes most of the way to reaching Biden's ambitious plans to create a clean energy economy. The bill could also help revive US global leadership in the quest to save the planet by prodding other nations to follow suit.

The victory is all the more remarkable since it was achieved against vehement GOP opposition in the 50-50 Senate, where Democrats had no room for error. Democrats spent months negotiating with themselves, as moderate senators like West Virginia's Joe Manchin and Arizona's Kyrsten Sinema extracted concessions that progressives had little choice but to accept to save the bill. Coal state senator Manchin revived the measure after reversing his opposition late last month and agreeing to a clean energy push in return for concessions on fossil fuels.

Asian-American Support for Biden Dissipates before Midterms

Support for Joe Biden among Asian Americans plummeted within the last year by nearly 30 percentage points, bringing the president underwater with one of the Democrats’ key demographics 100 days before the midterms, recent polls indicate.

A July poll conducted by the Pew Research Center showed 55 percent of Asian Americans to be strongly disapproving or somewhat disapproving of Biden’s job performance. Only 44 percent somewhat or strongly approved.

In April 2021, 72 percent of Asian-American voters surveyed by the Pew Research Center approved of Biden’s job performance, amounting to a nearly 30-point drop in approval among the fastest-growing racial or ethnic group in the U.S.

Amid the polling shift, a wide range of Asian Americans are running as Republicans for state-legislative and congressional seats in battleground states, including in Virginia, Georgia, Ohio, and Arizona.

“Lots of Asian Americans voted for Democrats traditionally because they thought they were the party of pro-immigration and pro-working class, but over the years they started to wake up to see their policies are totally damaging to our communities,” Lily Tang Williams, the only Chinese-born Republican congressional candidate running this midterm cycle, told National Review.

Williams, who is running for Congress in New Hampshire, said rising crime rates fueled by Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies, discrimination in education-admissions policies, and inflation are the key issues that are making Asian Americans flee the Democratic Party.

“Lots of Asian families traditionally value education. That’s the No. 1 factor they feel enables their children to live the American dream,” she added, faulting Democrats for policies that include getting rid of honors classes and downplaying test scores in admissions.
