WASHINGTON, May 19 (Reuters) - The top U.S. military officer, General Mark Milley, spoke by telephone with Russia's Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov, the Pentagon said on Thursday, the first conversation between the two since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February.

"The military leaders discussed several security-related issues of concern and agreed to keep the lines of communication open," said a spokesman for Milley, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I'm still missing the logic on why the West can't help out more in a country which is being brutally attacked and asking for all help available.

Because direct help would mean an armed conflict with Russia, because Russia is able to wreck havoc on western economy and already doing it, because lots of economic and political interests of western countries go far beyond a small country that may be not worth the hassle. At some point this Ukraine issue becomes like a sharp bone stuck in dog's mouth...can't swallow it and can't let it go.

Choices will have to be made by the west and the perceived unity against Russia is already showing signs of weakness. And the longer the conflict goes on for, the more that unity will be tested.

Ahhhh.....the truth finally comes out from Putin about his invasion of Ukraine. Of course, we all know (well, some of us anyways) deNazification of Ukraine was the big excuse for the invasion. The real truth is that, he wants a legacy like Peter the Great and make Russia great again by swallowing other countries into their fold.

Putin admits Ukraine invasion is an imperial war to “return” Russian land

Throughout the past few months, Vladimir Putin has offered up all manner of outlandish excuses for his invasion of Ukraine. At various different times he has blamed the war on everything from NATO expansion to imaginary Nazis, while also making completely unsubstantiated claims about Western plots to invade Russia and Ukrainian schemes to acquire nuclear weapons.

The reality, it now transpires, is considerably less elaborate and infinitely more chilling. Putin has launched the largest European conflict since WWII for the simple reason that he wants to conquer Ukraine. Inspired by the czars of old, Putin aims to crush his neighbor and incorporate it into a new Russian Empire.

Putin elaborated on his imperial vision during a June 9 event in Moscow to mark the 350th birthday of Russian Czar Peter the Great. He spoke admiringly of Czar Peter’s achievements during the Great Northern War and drew direct parallels to his own contemporary expansionist policies. The lands taken from Sweden during the Great Northern War were historically Russian and Peter was merely returning them to their rightful owners, Putin stated. “Apparently, it is now also our responsibility to return (Russian) land,” he said in a clear reference to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Putin’s latest comments underline his imperial objectives in Ukraine and expand on years of similar statements lamenting the fall of the Russian Empire. For more than a decade, he has questioned the historical legitimacy of Ukrainian statehood and publicly insisted that Ukrainians are really Russians (“one people”). Putin has also repeatedly accused Ukraine of occupying ancestral Russian lands and has blamed the early Bolsheviks for bungling the border between the Russian and Ukrainian Soviet republics.

His unapologetically imperialistic attitude toward Russian-Ukrainian relations was laid bare in July 2021 in the form of a 7,000-word essay authored by Putin himself which set out to explain the alleged “historical unity” binding the two nations together. “I am confident that true sovereignty of Ukraine is possible only in partnership with Russia. For we are one people,” Putin the amateur historian concluded. This bizarre treatise was widely interpreted as a declaration of war against the entire notion of an independent Ukraine and has since been made required reading for all Russian military personnel.

I guess Russian propaganda is taking root in Canada, and I must de-propagandize what has been said in this post.

Firstly, the "Idiots" that ran Ukraine were a puppet regime of Putin - the antichrist, the leader of the coming fourth reicht. The revolution of Maidan sought to oust these puppets. Secondly, Ukraine did not sell out 5% of its land to China, rather it had a wheat deal with Ukrainian agribusiness giant Mriya, which is now insolvent, and the authoritarian regime of China is out $3 billion.

Thirdly, I would like to re-educate you on Ukraine killing thousands of its own people. These Little Green Men that appeared in Crimea were not Ukrainian citizens, but rather lowly Russian paramilitary forces, which seized government headquarters in Crimea, and then held a referendum at gunpoint. Putler decided to absorb Crimea into Terrorrussia after the referendum. Subsequently, Little Green Men started to appear in Donetsk, Lugansk, and Kharkiv regions, but because of quick action, Kharkiv was saved by special forces. These Little Green Men became backed by Russian GRU, FSB, and later regular Russian troops which tore off their army Insigna, something which is against the Geneva Convention. Ukraine as a country has a right to defend its sovereignty. Let Putler have free reign, and concentration camps like Aushwitz and Dachau will start sprouting up, murdering hundreds of innocent Jews, Ukrainians, and Crimean Tartars.

The problem with Ukraine is it lacks modern weaponry to deliver precision strikes. Russia is fighting a dirty war, with ugly weapons, and Ukraine has no choice but to fight back. Arming Ukraine with precision weapons would eliminate a lot of civilian casualties, and make a lot more Cargo 200 for Terrorrussia. Terrorrussia's actions rival those of Islamic State's burning of a Jordanian pilot alive in a cage.

While all poor peasant Ukrainians, and many of them are forced to live on $71.00 a month, but that's a good thing because many Ukrainians have a garden - but THEY CAN'T HAVE MORE THAN ONE PASSPORT. Kolomoisky, who did a lot of crimes including stealing $billions from a bank in Ukraine - has three passports. Ukraine. Cyprus. And Israel. And guess where he lives now, that he has been found guilty of the biggest crimes in Europe?

I was told Russia is killing 100 Ukrainians a day. That's over 10,000 dead so far added to the 15,000 Nuland's criminal Yatsniuk finished off in 2014 = 25,000.

It could reach 100,000.
